Hi,
I'll be in Yellowstone this weekend and I was wondering what I must see besides Old Faithful? I only have two full days. Thank you.

My 2 favorite things (at the moment, It still changes a year later)were the Natural Bridge

and the ranger discussion about forest fire recovery out of the West Thumb ranger station. Now I want to add about 8 "but don't miss..."

It is a magic place. Now I have a better camera and I want to go back.

Alecia,

Well if you are going to see Old Faithful then there are a lot of cool mineral pools and such around that area. There is a walkway that you can go around if memory serves me. How are you going into the park? On the West entrance or the South? I just google'd this site, it may be of use.

You might want to PM rjkstesch she's been up there quite a bit on photo-ops.

Have fun!
Steve

Yellowstone Falls (at Canyon, north of Lake Yellowstone)is a must, Norris Geyser Basin (best basin for other Geysers, hot springs, girgles, etc. and big Bull Elk racks), Hayden Valley for Moose, Grizzly, Buffalo, Trumpeter Swan, waterfowl, Bald Eagle, Osprey, et al. Dress warm, they have had snow several times this month and it is always windy. Highs will be in 60s or less. Have fun. Van

I just returned from Yellowstone The upper and lower falls are a MUST!!!! and I mean a MUST!!!! Also Yellowstone has a Grand Canyon also VERY impressive. If you have the time the Tetons are within driving distance also a MUST. Good luck and be prepared to take a LOT of photos.

I pretty much C & P'd this from a previous post of mine on the same topic:

I hate crowds and tourists, so i'd say my favorite spot is Blacktail Plateau which is located between the Mammoth Hot springs and Tower-Roosevelt in the northern section of the park. There is a one way road dirt road that runs through some amazing scenery. I drove through mid-day, but was lucky to have some great dramatic light due to some looming storm clouds. This is probably a great place to be for sunset, but I wouldn't know.

here is a shot i took on Blacktail Plateau:

Other sites to see would be the Grand Prismatic Spring located between Madison and Old Faithful, some crazy visuals...

I took this on the walk to Artists Paintpots between Madison and Norris

I took this in the evening on the road between Mammoth and Norris, this is such a spectacular road ...

I dont have any pictures but Firehole canyon Drive near Madison was really really cool, and you can go swimming in the naturally hot spring heated water there!

Also, basically everything between Madison and Old Faithful is worth seeing. I found Old Faithful to be rather anti-climactic, but the Old Faithful Lodge is a phenomenal architectural feat and also a cool thing to take pictures of inside. Bring a tripod and take a long-exposure so the crowds get blurred out with the motion :D

If you're limited on time, I wouldn't spend much time in the East or South sections of the park, as they are not as photogenic as the west and North. The exception would be spots along the yellowstone river and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and related sites which are worth a stop.

You really can't go wrong just driving through the park and stopping wherever you want. It is so loaded with natural beauty that you'd have to actively try to take bad pictures.

Good luck and have fun, im jealous of you.

Buy Tim Cahill's book called Lost in My Own Backyard. And just look around you where ever you are out there.

I'm going at the end of the month for a week. Any suggestions on gear? I've been reading everything i can get my hands on, but would love any other opinions.

I grew up in Montana and visited Yellowstone nearly every summer as a kid. I'd say don't miss Mammoth (although it isn't as colorful as it used to be) and Morning Glory Pool (I've heard rumors it also isn't quite as blue due to mineral shift). Look for moose in the lakes around sunset / dusk. You'll almost certainly see a ton of buffalo if no other wildlife.

You're certainly in for a treat! My favorite things are the thermal features (bubbling springs, geysers, etc.), the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and wildlife that pops up when you least expect it. It just seems like there's something exciting and beautiful at every turn:

WOOHOO...Now I'm more excited than ever. Thanks for the great feedback everyone and for sharing pictures with me. They are truly inspiring. My 70-200 showed up in the mail yesterday just in time. Now I just hope I can lift the beast. It sure looks like a beauty though. Thanks again.

Besides the amazing geothermal wonders, there's wildlife of all sorts everywhere. Take a long lens.

We're trying to make time to go sometime this winter. I grew up in Colorado, and have been to Yellowstone many times, but never in winter.

I had a great time in yellowstone in 2005. Things that I loved were, Hayden valley and artist point. They were my 2 most favorite parts of yellowstone. There is also a great Sunset oppertunity on the west entrence of Yellowstone, on the second turnout of the Madison River.

I am glad to see you have a 70-200mm lens, you can get some great shots with it. Good Luck!
