If you had the opportunity to purchase a 30d at say $1,100aud would you go for it or wait and go for the 40d at $1,900aud. I'm thinking that 30d is a lot of camera but the 3inch screen and improved focusing on the specs sheet of the 40d look good - live view would be handy at times also. But the camera has not been tested yet so it's all just talk so far - will high ISO shots be better or not is anyones guess at this stage.
Anyway, just want to get an idea of what others would do. Thanks for your thoughts.

| 30D is a hell of a camera, if I were wanting to save the money I would not hesitate to buy it. |

I agree with noisemaker. The 40D sounds pretty good to me. I've only had my 400D for 3 months, so I won't be upgrading any time soon, but there's a lot in the specifications that sounds really interesting.

I'd say it's impossible to say until the 40D actually hits the shelves and the 30D price drops. If I were in the market, the amount of that reduction would be the determining factor.
However, in your consideration, don't forget the 14-bit ADC and supposedly lower noise sensor/processor combo. |

Observing the current currency exchange that's $907 for the 30D and $1567 for the 40D. Sounds like the 40D is one of the kits and the 30D is the body only.
For me I've waited a long time for the 40D. My deposit went in early A.M. on August 20th. |

Hi garrywhite2
The price for the 30d is for the body only second hand with 21month Canon warranty still in play with 5000 on the shutter. Current new price for 30d is $1,500 but could possibly drop when the 40d hits the shelf at an expected $1,900.
Edit: Have just found out that a canon 40d can be had in Australia for $1750. The gap is closing.

OK, this is an older thread that I started but it was before the 40d had come out and some had one in the hands.
What are the thoughts of those that have upgraded to the new 40D?
Have many upgraded from a 30D and was this move worthwhile in your opinion?
I'm still tossing up on whether to purchase a second hand 30D or go for a new 40D. I'm coming for a 350d and would like better focusing and I understand the 30D will do this as it is a step up from the 350d but that the 40D is an even better focusing system. (sigh) It's all too hard.

The 40D is a far greater improvement over the 30D than the 30D was over the 20D (the 30D should have been released as the 20Dmk2 or even 20Dn going by other upgrades to the Canon range). If you can afford it, I'd definitely recommend going for the newer model, as it's a significantly better camera IMO.

I just got my 40D today and I love it already. Got some good glass for it, now it's up to me to improve myself while using it.

I also got the Sigma EX 70-200 2.8 APO DG HSM Macro. And should have got today but didn't, the Sigma EX 18-50 2.8. I will be calling photobuff tomorrow to express my extreme displeasure that they forgot to include one of my lenses in the package, even though they charged me for it.

I actually held a 40D yesterday - felt good. I just don't know that I need all the extras it provides. Coming from a 350d I was thinking a 30d would cover everything I need. Better focusing, 5 fps, 2.5inch screen. It's tempting to go a good used one and work with that. I don't know that I shoot enough to warrant the funds for the 40d if you know what I mean. Cheers

I don't have it and I am not ging to get it. Where I live, the price difference between a new 30D and a (obviously also) new 40D is 500 Euros. I'dd rather invest that in decent lenzes than in a marginally improved camera. Actually, I am thinking of buying a 2n hand 20D plus a 200/2.8L for less than the price of a 40D body.
What do you call a 'better' focussing system? I have a (by now 'antique') 300D and it always focusses exactly where I want it to. What's to improve?

I don't know Canon cameras, but a fairly comprehensive review (it seems) is available here that compares the 30D and 40D models:

Good luck! :) |

| Shooting sports action with centre point and Al servo. 350d doesn't keep up with my 70-200 f4 IS USM lens. (I gather that's my problem but I could be wrong). More frames per second would also be better for this sort of shooting. |

Speed of focusing, precision of focusing in low light, more focus spots to choose from, and a magnified live preview to check focus closely on critical shots. Even the 20D does this better than the 300D, and the 40D is (from what I've heard) a leap forward from the 20D.
If you always focus manually, then only the preview is relevant to you. If you always use autofocus, the preview is irrelevant; it only works with manual focus.
