I had an entry in the "Power" challenge recently and invite you all to take a look:

My reason for posting is that I recieved a comment by user: digifotojo
which is very concerning.

Thank you to all who voted on this image- I appreciate your time.

Feel free to post and comments.

If he said, "That makes me horny" it would be concerning. Otherwise, it's just another opinion.

I would not get too excited about this comment. It is not offensive, to say the least. It may not be what you expected, but it is a reaction nonetheless. This site has x0,000 registered users, and to expect every single one of them to like the photo is idealistic. Be happy that you have received any comment from your 3 voters.

I sometimes wish I had such insight in my 1s, 2s, and 3s.

As far as your photo, (I haven't voted on the power challenge), I would have given it an 8 or 9. (8 initially, and perhaps a bump to a 9 after voting on all and on a second pass, depending on the other 8s I would have given.)

The bottom line, yes, you were robbed, but I would not consider the comment concerning, nor I would consider this enlightening in the sense that it depicts new trend at DPC - this is same old stuff...

Everybody wants comments but only if they are flattering the photo. This is why comments are getting scarce around this place. People calling people out in the forums because they don't like some comment they recieved. If you don't like the comment, then don't check the box as to whether it was helpful or not and respond to it in the comment section for the specific photo not in the forums.

P.S. People are entitled to their opinion regardless of whether you like it or not.

Yepp this is true.
I am one of the people who wish to write what I feel when I see the photo. This is not always positive, but then at least I am honest in what I said.

I agree with the comment that she should be concerned about the violence to a person, regardless of gender, but I don't agree that our emotions shouldn't have some influence on our vote.

I really don't believe you think that either, or you'd have just as well have taken eyecandy. You tried for something that would affect people. It did that. Some voted higher because of emotion, some lower.
Do you really want to forego that and have robots vote?

Any pictures with negative connotations in the mind of the voters seem to get voted lower than more positive pictures: same here and same in life. While the picture has clearly been staged (and pretty well, too) it does strike a sombre note and therefore will cause a reaction in the eyes and minds of the voters, which is probably what we are striving for anyhow.

I happen to agree with the voter's feelings in the general sense regarding the dehumanisation of any human, regardless of sex, ethnicity, etc. This photo made me react negatively as it pushed my buttons in this area. So, you should be congratulated as you succeeded in making me think about the picture - and that is a real result, I think.

no worries, keep up !

If you want success at DPC and all positoive comments, don't try for drama or anything with a dark side at all. Stick with shooting cute little kids, flowers, kitties, sunsets and anything else that's pretty and sweet. If you want something scary looking, insect macros are good too.

Waht's the problem? You entered a challenge with a nice picture, got a decent score, some nice reactions and a reaction that explains why some people do not like this kind of pictures. I can't see anything wrong with any of those elements.

Why is it concerning?

What is your reason for posting? I don't get it - you are getting feedback on how and why people have voted. If I take a technically fantastic image of a puppy being killed, then I would not expect the scores to ignore the subject matter.

Wow people are different... well what do you know, here's me thinking we all the same... FWIW, its a good shot as proved by the placing but as you can see some people get disturbed by images of violence, maybe the voter knows someone who was beaten by a gang or something....

you went for drama, got it, so wassup!

First, I do not think that one persons comment on your photo indicates a trend at DPC. If you look at all your comments, most liked the photo and the idea. Second, you actually had someone who had the guts to tell you why they voted your image down and now you want to drag them out chastize them for it. One of the constent complaints here is that people don't tell you why they gave you the score they did and this is one reason why, fear of being attacked for their opinion. This post is what's wrong with DPC, imho.

WTF, You posted a picture of a violent scene and someone reacted to it. What did you expect to happen, everyone to love the fact that you created a photo where a woman was being strangled to death in a manner that was so nonchalant to the main character that they could light up a smoke. It does a great job of portraying what the challenge wanted and you rewarded with a good score. Why call out the commenter? The only thing that will come of this thread is more people will be intimidated to give any constructive/negative feedback to entry. I agree with trevytrev, this is worse for DPC than giving an honest reaction to a photo. I side with digifotojo, who I hope you had the common courtesy to let her know you were starting a thread about her comment so she can defend herself.

for the OP: Forum Rules

11. Do not attack other users. This includes "calling out" specific comments or commenters in a hostile manner. Personal attacks are never appropriate in a constructive discussion. If you disagree with another participant, address their points without attacking them personally. Be aware that others may have differing opinions of a personal attack, so use care when posting. Please note that this includes publicly "calling out" commenters (whether by name or not) in a hostile way.

I'm not sure publicly bashing someone for a comment given on a picture is helpful for anyone. If you find the post offensive, you should contact the poster and/or report the post (specific button available).

I, for one, will vote picture up/down depending on how much I like or dislike a subject.

I agree, I think its actually a pretty good set-up shot, lighting is dramatic and I imagine its prettyy close to how you envisioned the shot. Its a great take on the `power` concept as well.

Are you pissed it didn't ribbon? is that it?

I totally agree. The photo is technically good and meets the challenge. Do I like the subject matter, no. But I would try to vote you fairly but I am only human. You want the photo to evoke some type of emotion, good or bad. You have achieved that.
09/13/2007 06:45:28 AM · #21
jprezant I can see why you are disturbed - I am too.

Someone voted your image low (they gave you a 3), they told you why (part of the recommendations of the site to tell the photog why they voted it down), and you decided to call them out in a forum (a violation of the forum rules - and it's also bad taste in my opinion).

For what it's worth, I think it's a good shot, but I actually think it would have done better with the heavy pounding on another guy rather than a woman - more 'gangster' like.

Next time, take the comment and run. Be happy they told you why they voted it down.

Edited for misspelling

I can't imagine a well balanced person being disturbed by that photo. Well maybe the singing children from the Sound of Music but that's it. Actually, those low votes could just be due to the DNMC happy happy joy joy poo poo on creativity crowd.
09/13/2007 07:10:30 AM · #23
Why exactly are you people disturbed?
In what way are you disturbed?
How does the picture make you feel?
Do you think that it ever happened in real life?
Do you think that it has happened in real life?
Do you think that a mob member and his hit man would actually pose for a shot while conducting business?
Does the picture make you want to cry?
Does the picture make you want to go save her? if so when you get there she will be fine because it's just a picture that was set up?

I would only like those that are disturbed to answer this and we can see if we can maybe understand your point of views.

1. You posted a picture of a violent scene and someone reacted to it
That's great. That means your picture has a strong message
2. You received a 3 vote with a comment
Perfect! I wish all the low voters could leave comments explaining their decision
3. You didn't liked the low vote
No one likes
4. You didn't accept the honest reaction from.someone disliking your work
That is bad! You should accept others opinion
5. You called that person to the forums
WRONG! IMO, you have the right to be unhappy but at same time you should be grateful because you know why you received a low score. The worse thing is to receive a bad score without knowing why

One of the female members of DPC left a comment on an image of a woman being 'beaten up' to say that they felt it was in poor taste . . .

I have no problem with that viewpoint, or her right to express it.

I would also refer back to the point made by mouten about calling out names.

If there is a problem talk to digifotojo but to be honest I don't see why she should change her opinion about pictures depicting women being apparently 'beaten up'.
