from an economical standpoint if that is possible LOL

I'm upgrading in the next few months. I'm going to hang on to my Oly because I love her so:o) She's been a great teacher but it's time to move up in the world. My camera choices are down to three now.
I need some good info on studio eqpt. I need something portable as I'll be doing on-site work. While I prefer to keep most of my work outdoors, I know I can't limit myself to just that. So what do I need to start a small portable studio? I've looked at package deals in my bhphoto catalogue, but not sure if that's the wisest thing to do.

As a childrens portrait photographer I carry around a small studio. The main elements of my kit are;

2 flashes on stands with umbrellas - I was supplied with prolincas. One is synced to the camera via a hotshoe attachment and cable, the other is a slave so you might want to look into wireless if you are going outdoors.

A backdrop and a stand to hang it on.

A reasonably heavy tripod, we have manfrottos.

A table to sit the child and props on.

Another table to sit the laptop on. The camera is set to remote shooting.

2 fairly comfortable camp style chairs. Life savers in the field, they make life so much more comfortable and enjoyable. One for me and one for the client.

A mouse for the laptop. I cannot stand touchpads!

The rest is props, signage, costumes and admin gear.

Good luck!

Thank you that is helpful.

With all the pros around here and people running small studios, I'd hope to get a few more responses lol.

You might consider bumping this up sometimes after dinner time as it is possible that many people are at work and cannot access this.

Thank you Ray. So here I am bumping this up.

I'd have thought after 100 plus viewings more then 2 people would have replied. I want to start pricing things so I have a rough estimate of how much money I'm going to need to set aside.

You really didn't give enough information. You say you are going to take your equipment out in the field and you need a small studio...does this mean you are going to do micro work, photographing bugs and flowers and small animals? Or do you mean that you plan on doing outdoorsy stuff like sports, race cars, horse track, boats and things like that? Or are you going to do street photography or maybe outdoor portraits of kids, parents or weddings or... well, there are a lot of things you could do and though they all have in common that you need a camera to take pictures, that's about where the simularaty could end depending on what you need.

If you are planning on doing it all... you can start by setting about $50K aside and that will get you started. ;)

That depends - your thread title left the topic WIDE open. I read your first post, just in case I had some wisdom I could bestow upon you out of the goodness of my heart.

Then I read the topic and decided to shut up since I really don't much about it at all - so I'm sorry, but I can't help :-(

Perhaps others are feeling just as clueless....

This indicates indoor capability is required also, which is what I do so I said what I have.

I do portrait work but only outside right now- hence the upgrade and need for portable studio eqpt.

Didn't mean to be so vague in my question. I suppose I'll repost so people will understand me better lol.
