Oops!

Just remember everyone, Canon lenscaps aren't as secure as you always think! I've had a few occasions where a small knock in the right place has caused it to fall off, but this time was the most inconvenient! I was leaning on the wall and had the camera hanging round my neck. As I put it down the lens cap came off and rolled along the wall a short distance, and before I could grab it, rolled off the edge!

All the meerkats from the enclosure came over to have a look. Some just sniffed around it, others decided it was a toy and started pushing it around, further and further out of reach! Once they had lost interest I tried to get it back. The wall was about chest height so I couldn't bend over it very far and my arms weren't long enough to reach even the ground closest to me. Luckily I had a leaflet which was quite long, and I managed to fold and curl in such a way that it became fairly rigid. I could just about reach with the leaflet but trying to push it under the lenscap to left it out just caused it to move further away with each attempt. Before it was too far out of reach I just started whacking it, trying to move it back towards me. When it was close-ish I got the map of the zoo out my pocket and used that along with the leaflet to create some pincers with which I managed to get hold of the lenscap and carefully lift it to safety! It was just dangling by the outer portion which protrudes slightly, and I was worried it would fall off.

This guy wasn't impressed!

And this guy had more important things on his mind!

You're such a tease! They had a cool new toy and you took it back. You jerk!

At least you got your lens cap back. A couple of weeks ago I was fishing mine out of my pocket out on the wharf. I managed to drop it, and it went straight down into one of the cracks in the planking and into the water -- didn't even hit the side.

Doh!!
Still... that's probably a skill which could win you quite a few soft toys at a carnival!

OH...that's what you call that plastic thing that comes with a lens. i thought it was just something that stayed in the box after you unpacked the lens.

Here's another place to not drop a lens cap. I almost lost the whole works when one of them took a snap at it. I had mud on the camera and a scratch in the shade when I pulled it back.

Maybe that's a warning to stop going to the in-law family reunions. (I'm KIDDING!) :P
I lost my sunglasses off the top of my head at the zoo...went right into the bear cage!! Um, didn't go after them, but did tell someone, lol. They were fighting over them, rofl, and didn't even know what the heck they were!

I did get the shot that I mentioned. There was an embankment about 5 ft tall where I shot the one posted earlier. When the gator almost got my camera, I was in a washout about 2 ft above the water and using my "magic picher stick" and self timer @ 5sec, with the camera upside down. The smallest gator in this pond is about 6 ft, as the larger ones eat the smaller ones. It was probably dangerous, but it one of those redneck "Hey watch this!" kind of things that I just have to get in on.

I buy generic lens caps from this site by the dozen, as I lose and scatter them all over.

They are inexpensive, and a good store to deal with.

I remember hitting one and feeling it fall off..... Then only to hear the clip...clip as it dropped down one of those street-side drains :-/ Game me an excuse to get a real Tamron replacement cap for my Canon lens and I ordered a few extra for the others while I was there. They are MUCH better :-)

I think a "your face is closer to the subject than you think" warning should flash up when shooting live subjects at wide angles.

You can't beat having your polariser licked clean by a deer;
