I told you guys I screwed up on that one... :-)
Is there one of those annoying whiny "Wah, I got a 7 and didn't get a ribbon OR a top ten" ribbons? I don't want one if there is, by the way. I'm back in the land of SLOOOWWWW internet, so it'll take me awhile, but rest assured I shall comment on all Free Study entries. |

I've got a proper Sucker entry for Impressionism - it dropped to 4.5 and is now staying there. I swear it's totally impressionistic though :) And I'm strangely happy with both the entry and the score (it amuses me). |

I don't mean this in any kind of rude way, but all of you beat him so badly that it's hardly worth mentioning.
Deb, you really cleaned house! You beat Larus, Marbo, jblaylockraynor, ursula......the Catherine comes in and joins you in beating Alex Saberi, elsapo, yanko, Joe Dannels......
There was some really awesome stuff and it was an expert editing challenge, too.
Deb, Catherine, Jeff........Be PROUD!!! WOO HOO!!!

The fact that you got a 7+ score and placed 11th speaks volumes about the quality of the photographers and the entries.
My ribbon wasn't against anything like that.
I'd gladly trade your no-ribbon 7+ for my 6.75 red!......8>)
Some of us don't even have ONE 7+ score!......8>)

I'm not scoffing the score at all - I'm completely, utterly, and totally flabbergasted with it. I think I'll keep it, too. I'm almost a little sad it beat my B&W shot, though. But as I noted in the comments, I'm pleased that a little shot from a country not known for it's beauty did so well.
And I'm with Jelena on the Impressionism thing. Got a 4.8, some great comments, and I'm happy with both the picture and perversely the score. I'm a weird cookie. |

And a hearty congrats to Jeffrey who despite being stalked by Deb's 7+ score, is still the consistent highest placing TS member in the Free Study Marathon. Deb has a strong second place for us, and it looks like the two of them will duke it out for who gets the TS seat at the FSM awards banquet..........LOL!!! |

Thanks Quiet...I ordered B&H catalog and have heard that they are very reputable to deal with. Their kits on a 400D are pretty reasonable also. |
If you are a member of Costco, keep an eye out for their specials on the Rebel XTi. Last week they ran an Internet only special of black 400D w/ 18mm-55mm lens, and 2GB CF card w/reader for $699.99. Keep in mind that they charge tax and s/h. |

It will end up on my front page either way, but I really want that 6! |

Keep watching it, Kelli - it may get there. Sometimes it'll dip for a bit mid-week then start going back up again. The scrubber can go either way. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!! |

Sorry I haven't been posting much; been reading, but not writing (both here and in my real life, which is a bit of a problem; anyway). Really, really wanted to enter imressionism, but didn't (go figure), so I just have my bokeh shot, which I like, but the score surprised me (a lot):

Funny that one commenter said it has bad bokeh! Looks set to be my new high score, but in any event will finally bump the first image I ever entered at DPC (which scored 6.0+ and got me hooked, and then I didn't get another six until June . . . ) off my profile page (it's not that I don't like it, I do, it's just the point of having finally gotten five images better than that one).
I wasn't going to do candy (actually, I generally don't do candy, never had much of a sweet tooth), but have an idea I may try this evening . . .
Congrats to all on the recent great scores. I know I still owe some comments for having high score in Fill the Frame; I'm almost done, hopefully will finish up tonight (it's the writing thing getting me again).
Oh, and Don, great poem. Thanks for sharing. My favorite poet is probably David Wagoner, though the most powerful poem I ever read was written by William Patrick (of whom I doubt many - if any - of you have ever heard). Anyway, he doesn't suck :)
Best,
Rob |

Just realized there is a hummingbird nest in a tree in the neighbors yard just over the fence. I've watching a hummingbird to see where came from and lo and behold...there is a pair! They have come out and sip the nectar in my morning glorys and passifloras three days in a row and have heard their high pitched chirp. Sometimes they fly out and just sit on the tiny branches of the passion flower. By the time I get my camera ready and try to sneak up on them...they disappear! How dare they!
Sooooo...I went yesterday to the store and bought a hummingbird feeder and set it up outside my bedroom window to try to draw them in closer. Have my camera pre-focused on the feeder. They are chirping away as I type :)
Any advice or tips on how to capture them????

No camera or technical advice, but you want to capture them without the bird feeder in the shot. One way to do that is to have a little natural branch as a "waiting room" perch near the feeder. Then you can pre-focus on that to achieve a more natural looking shot. Also if you find they sit in the waiting room before feeding, you can be ready for the take off, and hopefully catch them in flight. |
