You're preaching to the converted, but I respectfully add that nowhere does it say that techniques MUST be incorporated in-camera. And, judging by the entries in the last challenge, it seems the use of ps filters is acceptable. At the end of the day, simply judge an image on whether it has successfully convinced you. If it does, vote highly. If not, vote down :)

Learning a technique and using that technique to take a photo the technique will show in the original, and that is photography. you do not see filters in your originals. I do agree that a lot of the processing is well done but IMHO defeats the purpose of photography, if you use a lens blur while taking your original, you can enhance witha blur filter from photoshop because it is already on the original. and how many have been Dq'd for not haveing the effect in the first place.

Lucky I'm not very often a voter ... FWIW, good HDR shouldn't look Photoshopped either.;-)

Photography shouldn't look cheesy either but you proved them wrong. Bang! Zoom! :P

I received a nice comment that included that they liked the picture but did not care for the filter effect (and I did use one) but still gave me a decent vote. I aprecitate that. They said what they liked and what they did not like. This has been a very interesting challenge. Voting takes as much effort and I think knowledge as taking your own shot and given the wide range of image quality, I would expect a wide range of opinions in the voting.

One reason for this I think is that not many people have seen impressionsitic photography and perhaps a limited number knew what impressionist painting was all about so we came in without the usual pre-conceived notion of what was and was not a good picture. Dramatic lighting, bright colors, and sharpness- National Geographic type shots- were no longer the criteria so as voters we had to establish our own paramaters of what we thought worked well as a good impressionist photograph.

I used a filter and my score has held up pretty well. But I tried to apply it tastefully and preserve the original composition and feel. I actually asked the SC before I submitted whether the filters were OK (provided a sample) and where they drew the line in regards to 'altering the image' too much.

The SC's response was "filters are OK, but be aware that too heavy an application will not appeal to some voters'. I kept that in mind. It is like any effect in PS. For me, I think the difference is whether the image is relying solely on the PS filter for its effect or whether the basic image also is strong on its own.

I went into this challenge knowing and accepting that there would be lots of voters who liked the filter effect and a bunch that would poo-poo it and vote it down. But isn't that how it is when we have an image in a gallery or produce work for a client? In many ways the DPC voting population just reflects the greater population - arrogance and all.....

Bottom line is that I learned alot from this challenge. There is alot to gain from this process other than vote.... We should have more challenges like this.

Well I have gone through and voted on all of them. There are some really nice ones. The lowest score I gave was a 5. Plan on going through and possibly bumping some of the scores up (not down) and hopefully comment on some if not all.

Mine is doing much better than I expected. I like this challenge because the emphasis is on the intent or style of the photographer rather than on the subject of the photograph. I wish we had more challenges like this. Maybe Cubism next? We would all get another chance to think like artists (permanent brain damage is not impossible, but unlikely).

I have just been through all of the impressionism images a second time, after my first vote, and have BUMPED at least 60 to 70% of most of the images.
I did a 100% vote, so hopefully many of you will hopefully see your image scores improve.....

Well I havent hit 100 votes yet. I am sitting in the high 5's. I am happy with this as I risked useing a filter which is very obvoius and after reading the initial comments for impressionism, I was worried that I would be hammered because of it. I have had 5 comments and they are all positive which I am pleased about. I expected more to say they didn't like the use of filter (maybe they voted low and didn't comment!!)

Art is so hard to sell here.

I don't normally follow the vote counting threads like this, but my scores, thus far are:

Votes: 92
Views: 137
Avg Vote: 4.4348
Comments: 3

This would place it, right now, at 29th of my 31 entries to date.

Like many folks here, I become enamored of my pictures while getting them ready for submission. Even those that, in hindsight, are pretty awful. However, if I were to rank this one personally, amongst my 31 entries, I would place it in my top 3.

That this particular one is viewed so poorly by others has me flummoxed.

The 3 comments I've received don't really give me much of a clue as to why. They seem to suggest that it is a DNMC shot but don't actually say so.

I would like to get better at playing this game. I prefer entering photos that are, if not well received artistically, at least comment worthy. Lately it's been the worst of both worlds - low scores and few comments.

Here is the crux of the matter. Either the majority of the voters are completely clueless about what is true art ,or I am a talentless hack when it comes to photography.

I think if you're all honest with yourselves, you know the answer to that question.

Apology accepted.

I have no idea what my scores are, as I have once again had my scores turned off for days now.
Last time I looked, I have one image in the 6's, and the others, well we wont talk about them.....
I feel quite peaceful and looking forwaed to taking some photos today.....

Here are my questions to you jonejess...why is it that you question everyone else's votes for your shots...when your average vote given is not much higher than what your receiving right now...4.8020? Apparently, you believe you deserve higher than what you give?

Additionally, you have participated in 31 challenges...but, have only made 102 comments yourself??? But, your begging for comments on your image. I have participated in 25 challenges and have more than three times as many comments made.

So, how about some honesty here...you want the praise and high votes...but, don't wish to give it.

You want honesty?

My answer to you, imagesbytlp, is that you need to gain a sense of humor or at least an understanding of sarcasm and irony.

I neither need, nor want, nor am I "begging for", praise or high votes. My point was just the opposite. I guess I am even worse at making my point in a forum, than I am at photography.
