Does anyone in Canada have the 40D yet? If so, where did you get it?

All I've been able to find are pre-orders.

Not me. I ended up ordering from Ritz Camera in the USA because their web site said they had it in stock. The confirmation email I received now says it will ship when they replenish their stock... :O(

Is Canon's selling pitch 14 bit?

Pentax K10D is 22 bit!

14-bit means 14 bits per channel. I'm absolutely sure the K10D does not output 22 bits per channel; even medium format backs are 16 bits/channel.

I am so excited - my Ritz order - according to their website - finally changed from "back ordered" to "shipped" !!!!

No tracking info just yet, but good enough to have me dancing!

This evening just minutes after the place where I have my 40D on order from closed, I find it in stock at my local BestBuy.

I'm extremely bummed right now. I can't afford to take the chance and go buy it locally without knowing my other order is cancelled.

I'm hoping it will still be in stock tomorrow. If it is I'm driving to BestBuy and verifying they have it. Then I will call the other reseller and cancel my order.

I so want this new toy. My Minolta 5D is rapidly dying and I've got a shoot coming up in a couple of weeks.

So far the best info on a Canadian site is 'coming soon'.

Best price in Canada is $1379.95.

At least it's on their site now.

So then what is the workflow if CS3 won't open the RAW images?

Open in the canon software and then what?

Convert to 16bit tiff or psd.

Maybe it's 'cause he's not using a D40. ;o)

Maybe because I've only had it for an hour and took a vacation from challenge entries for a while? I'm eager to give the camera a proper workout, but it'll be slow going until Adobe and Apple update their software to read these new RAW files!

I'm so jealous.....

Anyone want to buy a 20D? HEH
09/05/2007 06:00:47 PM · #70
I finally got my 40D. My local BestBuy managed to get 2 in stock. They put one out on display (dumb move, wasted a perfectly good camera) and I picked up the other one.

I've only had it for about an hour and all I can say is WOW. This thing is far more camera than I'm used to with my old Minolta 5D. I have a lot of learning to do.

I'll try to take a few pics and post them as soon as the battery is charged.

I'm off to go watch the battery charge :-)

Bibble Pro has just added 40D to its compatability list..

Saw this noise comparison on dpreview. I do a lot of low-light and am concerned the 40D has more noise than the 30D. Anyone have experience with both 30D and 40D in low light (taking pictures of bands)?

I don't see much of a noise difference in those posted examples (I couldn't tell if any of the noise reduction modes were enabled). Given the increase in resolution, I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Battery is charging.....

Too bad XT batteries don't work with it.

Does anyone know if I have to remove the old Canon software (12.1 disk) before I install the new (15.1)? Only the PhotoStitch version is the same.

Since that test was run with pretty good control of exposure between the cameras, I ran a comparison on the standard deviations of a 64px by 64px (4096px total) dark grey swatch on the remote control, for both 800 and 3200 ISO for both cameras. Here are the results:

They are remarkably close. In fact, a difference this small is pretty much meaningless. There are lots of things that can affect the noise performance, most notably what the in-camera settings were, and that we don't really know here.

ETA:
The numbers in the table are the standard deviations (lower is better), except the RH column, which is the ratio of 40D/30D. in the RH column, numbers less than 1.0 mean the 40D was (slightly) better at that setting than the 30D, and numbers above 1 mean, well, the opposite.
