How about a list ranking the top commenters for each challenge? Hopefully some kind of recognition of the top 10 or 20 commenters (by number of comments) per challenge would encourage people to comment more? |

I find commenting really helps me to distinguish good shots from bad ones, so often on my second and 3rd look I see something I had completely missed the first time, it also forces me to be articulate in my 'why' i dont like a shot. |

Sounds okay to me, I'm into any kind of statistics. Although I'm not sure if it's anything really helpful here.

I don't suppose it offers any particular help, just recognition for those who comment a lot. |

Statisically speaking, even tracking the "helpful" comments would be interesting! I know I for one need to comment more and will be working on that in the future!

Like I already said, I am into any new statistics and I have a whole list of other statistics which could be included into this site. However, I'm just wondering how much coding is required to implement such new features. I'm not a programmer but I guess something like that kind of coding is pretty time intensive.

Comments are already stored relative to cetain photos, which in turn can be related to certain challenges. I guess the SQL would be relatively easy to get it out of the database ranked by user.
I don't know PHP, so I can't say how easy it'd be to put it in a table per challenge, however, but I'd guess it's not too troublesome.. |

This would be a really good idea. People like "winning" and numbers. They like to keep track, as it were. If one person is commenting on 80% of the pictures every week, sure they DO deserve a 'list.'
If we can have "least viewed" and "Lowest score" and even "statistically highest photos" (your own highest votes, all 10s usually) then this stat should DEFINITELY be included.

For this to work it would have to have a minimum number of words per comment. Other wise someone would go through and type I like this or Good shot on all the entries each week just to be the top. |

Yuh... we could just cut and paste "this is a very very very good shot and I really like it a lot. You have done a good job."

I'd imagine (and hope) someone who did this would fairly quickly be identified as the fraud they are. :-) |

It doesn't matter... where there are lists, there are people who want to be at the top of them.

A valid point! Even the trolls could top that list! As nice as it would be to increase comments, only constructive ones really help us improve our work!

It shouldn't be that hard to query the data base for a list in order of percentage of "useful" comments made. That might give a result somewhat closer to what I think is desired here. But I think (similar to John) that lists tend to increase the competitive nature of the site, probably somewhat at the expense the cooperative spirit. |

Perhaps just acknowledging comments or commentors in the forums would encourage folks to do it more, then the site need not change and folks would be encouraged to do it more. Just a thought. |

This is how we could find a mentor. Someone that enjoys giving helpful comments.

When I became a member of the CC, Setz had the #1 spot for CC comments made. Every day, I would make more and more comments just trying to top that. So, yeah, it could work for me. But I'd probably be beat out by the 'good shot' commenters, as mine tend to be quite wordy most of the time. Maybe it could only apply to people who comment and make X number of UNIQUE words, kind of like on photosig. But you wouldn't win anything for it or anything, so being a troll wouldn't really get you anywhere. Anyway, I made it to the top of the CC list. :) Don't know who's there now. Probably not me anymore. I'm gonna have to look into that and get my booty back on top again. lol
Thanks for the reminder. :p |

As GeneralE said - I think it would have to be based around comments ticked as useful.
Maybe as a sideline this would also encourage people to think more about ticking comments as useful, rather than marking comments of "great shot" as useful, when they're possibly not.
To prevent John's copy-paste problem, how about just counting unique comments? I'd imagine that would be a fair amount more overhead, however.. |

This is where having a checkbox for just "Thank You" will be good
For all those who say "Great Shot" I would indeed like to say thank you
