This smunching of colour yuckness taken from a random photo of sky. Is it at all fixable or preventable?

That's "pixelation", caused by any of a number of factors: low-res camera, saving too small a jpg, messing around with contrast and/or saturation, lots of things. We need more info. How large of an area is that (in pixels on the original) for example? Show us the whole, unedited shot would be great.

I have the whole shot on my blog //dreamingplace.ca ... but I could never post the whole image on here ( my connection is *really* crappy .... think 24 kb per minute and you'd be very .. wishful thinking)
But really its just a small portion of the photo that I did indeed play with in photoshop to get a better result as that sky portion turned out very pallid and not as sultry as I wanted.
"pixellation" i wouldn't have called it (I do pixel art and it seems a lot different than that) |

is that the actual size one? comes up rather small for me (using old win 2000 pro)...on another note...when I click on the images it does not allow me to simply hit BACK to return to your main page...I wonder if that is something my system is doing.
See aliqui and bear's notes about color banding. |

I can't go back to the main site either once I've opened the larger photo. I use IE7. I'm not sure what's preventing us from going back. My guess would be this bit of code on the enlarged photo page:
if (top.location != self.location) top.location = self.location; |

Did you shoot in RAW? If so, try converting to 16 bit tiff for better color transitions. Or if jpeg, you could try overlaying a similar color gradiant layer to the sky area with maybe a little bit of gaussian blur to it, set to about 40% opacity. |
