I'm a bit confused about what the optimal condition for doing monitor calibration is. If you usually edit photos in daylight with your window shades open, is that also the environment during which to perform the calibration? Or does all ambient light need to be minimized? I use a colorvision Spyder.

calibrate in the light you'll use it in.

I have delved into this myself. See this thread that I started. I also answered my own question (3rd from last).
