Well I just started school a few days ago, and knowing that my Pentax 35mm was broken took it in for repairs. They said that it would cost so much to fix that I should just get a new camera.

Any suggestions on a good SLR?

Im looking to spend around 250-350 for a body.

I'm a huge fan of manual SLRs, like a good nikon FM2n. Focus, apeture, shutter, what else do you need.

Ok I think Ive decided between the

Canon EOS Elan 7

and the

Nikon N80

Anyone use either of these?

The Nikon N75 is very nice too. Considerably less than the N80 - depends on how much $$ you want to spend. (N75 being about $250 for the body)

I've had a bad experiences with my Nikon 6006, after having owned it for two years it's electronics have gone haywire and malfunctioned numerous times, I've had it to the shop twice to the tune of 300 bucks in "repairs", without the problem being fixed. Meanwhile my 20 year old Ricoh KR5 fully manual works like a charm to this day. Do they even make cameras like that any more?

Leica is one of the last to still make fully manual cameras like that (rangefinder, not slr), but the prices are VERY high. I think the last fully manual SLR from a major maker was the Nikon FM2n, but it's been replaced by something less than spectacular.

I think Nikon also make a fully manual rangefinder camera, for about $5,000 - just to keep up with Leica et al.

edit - Yup - here is a link to it. $5000 gets you a fully manual camera with a 50mm f1.4 prime lens.

And people say that DSLRs are over priced...

Hey, you are asking at a digital camarea site for a film camera advice? Stay away from film! Since I got my first digital cam, far inferior in options to my Canon EOS 10, I have made 3 times the number of pictures that I ever made using film cameras in my whole life (and you don't want to know my age). That is not counting the pictures that I discarded (about 1 in 2-3) due to low-quality, out of focus, what have you. Digital picture taking has changed my life. What school are we talking about? Photo art-school?

I definitely agree on the digital vs film. I wouldn't even look at a "modern" film SLR, but I still love the purity of the old manual 35mm rangefinders and SLRs. Aperture, shutter speed, focus and a brain where all you needed.

I think I bought the 10D because it felt almost as good in my hands and the controls were very intuitive.

WOW! I've got an old (25 YRs) Minolta entirely manual. I'll gladdly sell it for 5000!I'll even start at 500!

Seriously I miss using it, took thousands of pics, Had hundreds actually developed, love some of them and sold 1.

Digital rules! Too bad my wife got me a point and shoot. Lots of work to change the settings. Anyone want to trade their DSLR for a valuable antique?

Im going to school for photography and I am still a firm believer that film is still better than digital...not for much longer. And you still can't beat the smell of darkroom chemicals. Photoshop smells a little bland to me.

Im sticking with my 707 for digital and for lots of practice shots but I think if I showed up in the darkroom with a memory stick people would look at me funny.

Ive been leaning more towards the Canon anyway and now hearing a bunch of negative things about Nikon makes my decision a little easier.
