I'm going to be in some great seats at the Cincinnati Reds game coming up September 11. I will be 3 or 4 rows back in the seats directly behind the catcher. I'm not sure if I'll have much of an angle or not. I know my seats are in that section, but don't know exactly which seats yet.

I've been toying with the thought of renting a better lens to play with at the game. Any thoughts on which one(s) would be a good choice for baseball shots?

Does anyone know of a place to rent around the Cincinnati area? Any reccommendations for the online suppliers? I've seen several, but wouldn't mind knowing where to go or where to stay away from!

Thanks!

Judy

I've heard you need 400-500mm to shoot baseball, and while I don't have much experience, I would concur. I've had decent seats at Great American Ballpark and took my 70-300mm and got some decent shots, but for sure would have liked 400 or 500mm to get the closer action shots.

As for rental, I would try Cord Camera. There's a place downtown, but the name escapes me.

Edit: Provident Camera is the place downtown. If neither of those places rents out equipment, they can at least point you in the right direction.

You might want to be sure that large lenses are allowed in the first place. Many venues/leagues have limits as to what they'll allow fans to bring. It would be a bummer to go out and rent something that the security folks won't let you bring.

That said, a 300mm 2.8 would be nice. You'd need something even longer to get good action out in the outfield, though.

Yeah they are probably going to give you a hard time:

Guests are welcome to bring cameras and video recorders into the ballpark for personal use provided game action is not recorded, as required by Major League Baseball. Cameras and video recorders are welcomed provided their dimensions do not exceed the 16" x 16" x 8" Major League Baseball size requirement. Guests are requested to avoid standing in the aisles while using this equipment. Guests should not obstruct the views of others while taking pictures and refrain from using tripods, monopods and other camera support pods. The Reds reserve the right to remove any Guests who do not cooperate with this policy.

I just went to a Mets game and got in fine with my camera backpack, which was under the size restrictions. I called ahead of time to be sure, though, and I'd bet it varies from stadium to stadium. My biggest lens was a 70-200 2.8, which is hefty, but sits in my backpack easily.

From near the top of the stadium (we were in the upper section), I used the 70-200 at 200mm, plus a 1.4 teleconverter for an equivalent of 280mm, and was able to fill the frame with the batter, catcher, ump, and some of the base paths. It wasn't a closeup by any means, but from where you'll be, I think you're going to need 300mm only if you want to count pores on the batter's nose or make the cover of Sports Illustrated. Once you hit 200 or 300, your biggest challenge will be shutter speed. I was able to shoot at 1/500s at F/4 (the teleconverter robs me of a stop) and froze action pretty well - got one shot of the ball on the bat!

Here are two shots I took. I deliberately blurred them when shooting for the blur side challenge; most of my shots were very sharp. They just show what 280mm gets you from the top of the stadium. They're both cropped a bit, maybe 20% along each side.

BTW, right behind home plate means that:
1) You're going to be shooting through the net
2) You're going to be looking right at the pitcher, but at the back of the batter.
