A little soccer today.
With a storm coming in the light just barely held on. I went from 200 to 800 by the end. BTW, hand holding a 300/4 + TC isn't too bad, hand holding it in high winds....

ETA: Full gallery here.

Nick might I suggest that you either bump the ISO or lose the TC to gain some shutter speed, otherwise, nice stuff.

Thanks Matt,
My shutter speeds were dropping as far as 1/200 at times (quickly resulting in an ISO bump). I thought about losing the TC, but even with it I still needed to crop quite a bit. I'm also not thrilled with the XTi at 1600 so I really consider 800 the max for anything usable above 4x6. (I'm expecting a Mark III Monday!!!! I cant wait for useable 3200!!! 6400 even for emergencies!)

Well after doing team photos, editorial shots and so forth finally saw some live action tonight. Likely my toughest sport to shoot, and man was I rusty, games went really quick as well so barely got into a groove and it was over. Timing sucked and I struggled most of the night. Here are a few I selected All shot with the 1DMKIIn, 70-200 non is, camera in manual mode, ISO 3200, F2.8, 1/400, Al servo focus, center point focus, high speed drive and a custom white balance.

Looking pretty sweet to me! :D Nice action shots and with that stubborn indoor gym lighting to deal with.

Back to the volleyball court for tonights assignment, felt pretty comfortable shooting tonight. Although I was all set to use flash and had everything metered and set up for it, and then the officials decided I didnt need to use it. So while the mom and pops and even the yearbook kid fired off their flashes I bumped the ISO and fired away. Its a shame cause I had a nice exposure setup going with 1600ISO, 1/500th/ F2.8 and +1FEC. But not to be, these are shot at 3200ISO, 1/400th, F2.8, tomorrow night high school football!!!

Anyone else shooting sports these days? Come on dont make me be the only one posting!

One quick one from tonight. I have alot to go through still but I knew this one was a keeper when I pushed the shutter. This young man has already commited with Nebraska as a linebacker, he isnt too bad of a running back either. I'll add a few more later tonight after I get my stuff into the newspaper.

Nice shot! I can't wait for football to start here (1 more week). Was this from the first quarter of a night game? I see reflections of the lights, but at first I thought it was an overcast day game. Also, if you don't mind, what lens/ISO did you use (I assume this was with the MKIIn)?

Thanks Nick, I almost forgot how to shoot football, this was opening night and I didnt get to shoot any scrimmages or jamboree's. Camera is the 1DMKIIn, ISO 800(still early in the game) F2.8, lens is the Sigma 120-300 F2.8. Our games start at 7pm here so for a bit we get a little bit of good light to start, this stadium is first class though, as you can tell it has turf and great lights. I can shoot 1600 ISO 1/500th and f2.8 with just fill flash. I'd love to shoot here every night, but alas I'll be at a black hole next week. Back to work, editor waiting on me.

I agree that v'ball is really, really tough to shoot. The action is fast and short and very hard to anticipate, especially through a lens. I find v'ball and hockey the hardest sports I've shot.

I take it you were going to use FP flash? Do you get enough range with it?

Or does the MKIIn sync at 1/500? I've got a MKII which syncs at 1/250. I've used FP flash for indoor track meets with pretty good results, but the flash range is limited a bit.

Only the original 1D syncs at 1/500, I use HSS as canon calls it and I get great coverage with my 580EX or the 550EX. The new 1DMKIII has a 1/300 max sync speed. I'll find a cross field midfield shot from last night to show you coverage, but as I said last nights field is the exception to the rule as far as HS football fields go.

Here are a few wakeboarding shots. I haven't been able to get out much this year so these are a bit old.

nice stuff, guys! i guess summer's really over ;-)

this was a huge weekend at R-MC: 2 men's soccer games, 2 field hockey matches, volleyball, and women's soccer. i deliver my 5 best to the SID asap, then process all the keepers to 300dpi and burn him (and myself) DVDs later. here's what i turned in last night...

all in all, not a bad way to start the school year ;-)

Some shots from a BMX race (actually, these are from the practice, on-camera flash as the only light source doesn't look so hot and the light was almost gone by the time the race started)

Shot football for the first time last night... damn. I need to read up on the game, watch way more of it, and find a way for my flash to recycle faster. Having a lens a few stops faster wouldn't hurt either.

Got two usable shots all night:

I'm really new to this but am getting a bit better at it each game I take. My son is the one with the long dark hair and headband.

Got to have the ball in the picture or they just don't work.

This is Australia Rules for those that don't know the game.
