Ok..I had a budget of 1400.00 went to wolf camera, got the 400d xti, 4gb card, nice aluminum case, kit lens, and 75-300 canon lens. Ended up $1348.00 total after instant rebate applied. Was it a good choice or possible mistake? I wanted the 30D, but was over $1500.00 with just kit lens and I didn't have it, and probably wouldn't for a while. Just like some opinions...

not to sound mean but isn't it a bit late to ask this? It sounds like you're already wondering if you are gonna be happy with it in which case I think you should return it and just wait for the one you want.

I think if it was a D80 it would have been a better choice. But it sounds pretty good for your budget, I would take a xti with all the extras over a 30d with only the kit lens any day. That is, if Nikon went out of business and hell froze over.

Edit:

I do the same thing all the time. I always wonder if I made the right choice when I buy something. I research it until I know the color of it's butthole but still I wonder...

How did we know you'd chime in with something like that?
Holy Cow, dude!

So I had THIS queued up to say:

You didn't go wrong. That is a nice setup. :O)

Depending on your future needs, you'll likely end up looking at different lenses & upgrading things along the way - but that is a great place to start.

...and then I saw from your profile that you already have a 20D. Interesting. The xti has some updated features, but I'm surprised that you went with that as an "upgrade".

Personally I would've spent the 1400 on new glass to use on your 20D.
But that's just me :O)

Do you have shares in Nikon? Or do you work for them? Or perhaps they pay you commission? I'd love to know, because if you're not making any money out of your 'nikon v canon' posts, then you must be trolling.

Camera

Lens 2

Total $1518.90 USD without shipping.

Honest opinion you spent the money wrong.

ETA now knowing that you have a 20D I'd likely change my opinion but wont now. ALthough going from a prosumer camera body back to a consumer body wouldnt be a step that I would recommend to anyone.

I'll assume that you were happy with the look and feel of the camera or you wouldn't have purchased it. As far as performance is concerned I think you'll be happy. I've very been pleassed with mine.

Would I prefer a 30D or even a 5D with a bunch of L glass? Probably but with the budget I have to work with and my current skill level I'm very happy with the equipment I have today.

Best of luck. If you haven't already, check out the work that been submitted here at DPC with the xti. xti page

Ok well, now that I know that you already have the 20D, I'm not so sure. First off with the release of the 40D, the cost of the 30D is going to drop and it won't take long. I hope you weren't blinded by what is most likely an uninformed sales person from Wolf. I used to work for a short time for Ritz which is the same company. I was the only sales person who actually did research and then only sold what the person really wanted and needed. Many of the people who work for these companies only sell what they like, not what the customer wants. With all that being said, you said you had a budget of 1400.00. Take back the goods and do some research online and find a new 30D in you price range, there are some very reputable camera stores that are already dropping the price of the 30D. Then buy glass and a flash. Just my 2 cents.

If you can turn it on and shoot with it, you got the right camera.

You could have gotten more for your money anywhere other than Wolf. However I routinely overpay at Wolf simply because it is 5 minutes from home and I can have what it is I want immediately - no shipping wait.

So I can symphathize. Money is made to be spent. If you don't feel bad about spending it, go have fun with your new gear.

I don't have the 20D anymore...sold it last year in November...it had to be sent back to Canon 3 times for the mirror locking up and sticking...was a camera problem each time, so I decided to sell it after the last time I got it back....wayyyy to many problems with it. I like the 30D alot, but for what I do this is a good choice. I'm not out making money, just taking snapshots every now and then and helping a few models out sometimes as well. No real money in it for me, as this is mainly a hobby, besides, the 30D is alot heavier than I want to carry around for a couple of hours. I like the light weight of this camera, and it has good balance with every lens I have tried on it. Thanks for all the input from everyone!

While there may have been better ways to spend the money, it sounds like you got what you wanted and what suits YOU.

Don't feel down, enjoy your new toy!!!!!
