There were a lot of really great photos in the Speed Challenge Freestudy, so I'll say this up front; I'm not complaining about my placement, heh.I'm just looking for a bit more feedback to help me out since I'm in that dreaded middle range where no one looks after a challenge.

I've never taken a long exposure shot quite like this, but I had always wanted to try. It was very cold standing in the water at night on the Oregon coast, so my boyfriend and dad pressured me into leaving before I really wanted to. I would have liked to stay longer to show off the lighthouse more. Yes, there's a light house there! Heceta Head Lighthouse to be exact.

I got a couple comments saying the foreground was a little too dark and another saying the foreground was boring. Is there anything else? Is it technically okay?

great image, buddy. if it helps, when i do long exposures, i of course look for the brightest selection of my "frame" and meter there so there's no blowouts. if you were going for a high-key type image, you did a great job. i think it would have scored somewhat higher if the highlights weren't blown out in the sky and on the water. i like it though, it makes it look dreamy, if that makes sense.

still, you had a great score in a tough challenge.

nice job :D

Actually I think that's a look I was going for when I edited it, because I remember Dodging for more whites. Maybe I have a calibration issue, but I shouldn't be too far off. I checked it on several monitors.

Hey! Maybe that's a start to a personal style! I'm not happy if the lightest object in the photo isn't noticably white, heh. Sweet, I'm developing a style!

=)

It's funny that you should be the one replying to this. I used your profile pictures and a couple others to get an idea of what I wanted to do before I headed to the coast. I was hoping for a more interesting foreground, but the tide was coming in fast and covering up all the cool rocks.

Thanks for taking time to let me know what you thought. Now if I could just get someone to be rough on me, heh.

I'll post an original tonight when I get home from work. I'll admit, I'm a little scared to, but I'll do it.

What about a combination of the two...i think the orange and blue compliment each other well...leave the bottom half (under the horizon) processed and the top unprocessed?

I edited the bottom half first, so I think I chose not to leave the top blue for some reason that I can't quite remember. I think it didn't seem natural to me. Not that the amber version is natural, but it's at least balanced, heh. I'll try that again when I play with it again this weekend.

I saw a commercial last night... I think what I was lacking was some Persian warriors!
