Awesome technique - but as you predicted there is going to be a real debate as to whether the application of this technique leaves us with a "photograph" or a "graphic". This could be interesting :-) |

That is so awesome. Love the part where they erase the people clean out of the picture and it was so easy. |

Holy CSI Miami, Batman!
A Geologist could really use that to screw with investors!

Soon to be integrated in Photoshop CS4 :) (not really, but it wouldn't surprise me if Adobe gave these guys loads of money for exclusive use of that process...)

So currently; by resizing our photos for DPC we are all clearly breaking the basic editing rules by moving or removing pixels from our images.
That's going to lead to some serious challenge recalculations!

Unbelievable. Great concept. Would be interesting to see this work on a large format capture, or more notably an enlargement. Wonder how noticable it would be when seen in a large size.
Great find though. Amazing what some people are able to come up with.

That software is amazing. I wonder if/when it'll be available for beta testing? :) |

As I understand, this is an academic project. There were probably instances in the past (another Shamir was involved, together with Rivest and Adelman) where a university project got transformed into a private enterprise, but this may mean that the results of this research are to be made public as a benefit to the masses.
That also means no exclusive rights for Adobe - you cannot buy out published academic research, as far as I know. |

Here's a link to the pdf about seam carving. Forget trying to get it from the author's site at this point. |

Hi,
If you are looking for a software to try out seam carving, take a look at //www.thegedanken.com/retarget/
The program that you can download there (for Windows and Linux, and free) is already highly optimized concerning speed, and apart from enlarging or decreasing image size you can also use masks to protect or delete certain parts of your image.
Have fun,
Irmgard |

Before...
...after.
Check out rsizr.com for a Flash-based implementation of seam carving that lets you resize images, both in height and width simultaneously, in real time. (You can rescale and crop images too!)

I just tried the flash one, amazing! I don't totally get how to use it as it seems to revert to the original after finishing the scale so I can't save it, but seeing it in action on one of my own photos is fantastic!

Try grabbing one of the boxes at the side of the picture and moving it inwards. Seems to work for me.
