So.....my Free Study entry......
I am completely where I want to be with a shot.
I stepped outside my comfort zone on a couple of levels....B&W, I used some PP techniques I never tried before, and I usually hate that whole "Clever in a Foreign Language" title thing.
And I *did* get the official "Comment of Approval" I was genuinely seeking with the title from Fearless Leader.
Manna from Heaven.....pun intended......8>)
(Just in case anyone is unfamiliar, "Requiescat In Pace" is Latin for "Rest in Peace".)
Thanks, Don, the title was solely for you and I thought it was appropos of this lovely, yet sad view of an old Benz decaying in a field behind a body shop.
The only thing that sucks is that it is my only B&W entry that's over 6, and it's going to be on my front page for a whole two days before it gets knocked off.
Anyway, back to my whole touchy, feely point.......I would *never* have been able to produce such an intrinsically good, and now favorite, photograph had I not been here to study, learn, and appreciate some classic photography techniques.
Edited for clarity......I tried, anyway!

Walking is good. The bats may be carriers of rabies so I would not get up close. |

Yes, good title because this does have a classical feel to it (though I would have a tough time explaining why), and also a "rest"ful feel to it. |

I felt that the old girl still had this aura of regal and elegant bearing even in repose.
That's what caught me.
I saw it from the road from about 100 yards away and it just grabbed me.
I had this outtake that has a better view of the decay that I almost entered, but there was just somethig that ended up a lttle more surreal about the one I entered without the more vivid detail. It was a tough choice between the two. I still like the bleakness and harsh detail of this outtake, but the entry more invokes a feeling of loss for the old girl.
All in all, I think part of why this worked for me was because of the emotion and personification that this old car brought me. It's why I was involved with them for so many years. Now I don't drag them home and breathe life into them. I preserve them as they are with my camera.

She's a lovely old gal, Jeb. :-)
So it was an interesting day. Didn't get much sleep, but got up and did the morning walk anyway - this time we went up and around "signal hill" - a big piled up mound of dirt currently used for antennae and such, that was built with the dirt excavated to make the lakes on this complex that was once Saddam's.
Went to work - didn't have internet for the morning so I went down to visit the Palace, where I can access the internet (and my home email) through another computer system. Took some more pictures there (my speed free study was taken at the Palace). Went back to the trailer, then went for a "tour" with one of my coworkers, who wanted to see the other "signal hill", from which, rumor had it, you can see Baghdad. You can, sorta. Took more pictures. Went back to work.
Worked up a few pictures to share, but couldn't upload them because we get to a point in the afternoons when the computers pretty much just won't talk to anything anywhere. I'll try to upload them tomorrow.
Oh, and while I was working on pictures, got to hear the Big Voice say "Incoming! Incoming!" for the first time. Sure enough, things came in and went boom somewhere. Normally things just go boom with no announcement. So that was exciting. And it's my birthday. :-) |

Thanks! I treated myself to a mocha from Cinnabon and a chocolate chip cookie after dinner. The fact I get a mocha from Cinnabon every day and a chocolate chip cookie when they have them does not detract from the treat factor. |

How do you get so many comments? I have all of 13, with is a lot for one of my entries. To get more, I usually need to DNMC or submit a picture likely to be found offensive. |

Happy Birthday, Deb!!!
You do remember that if someone shouts "duck!!" they're not talking water fowl, right? Stay safe, please. Oh, alright, pretty please with sugar on top.
Best,

Oo maybe that's what I did. Actually I did deliberately enter something that I thought DPC wouldn't like, to see what happened. As a result I have 409 views and 23 comments, which for my images is massive.
So one of the ways to get a load of comments would seem to be to go with your instincts. |

Hey, there have been two times I've gotten this many comments.
My ribbon and my B&W challenge entry where I completely pissed off the DNMC police.
I'm keepin' my fingers crossed!

A day or two late but everyone needs to have a chocolate and flowers on their birthday even if it's just virtual. Wishing you many more, Deb. |

Happy Birthday from me too, Deb! Cookies, yum!!
I finished my second day of training at the new job. It's going good except for the fact that I have to learn a big old honking film camera along with the digital. They won't have enough digitals for everyone until January, so we're going to have to rotate. Having lots of fun though. |

It dropped from 7'04 to 6.93 over the last couple days, after I already had 190 votes.. |

That sucks.....ya can't really whine about a 6.9, yet you want to flop down on the ground and beat your hands and feet and scream 'cause you didn't get a 7 like you were supposed to.......don'tcha hate being a grownup????
The upside is that we're both going to get a PB and shake 'em up in the Rural and Urban challenges!
Heh, heh......GO TEAM SUCK!! WOO HOO!!
