I think your reply is interesting. If you have a mind, and can make your own opinions -- one person's opinion should not sway you in the least. I do not mean that in a rude way, I just don't know how else to write it, forgive me. You will either find merit in the photo upon your own review or you won't. Another's opinion should have little influence...

Generally speaking, I would agree with you. I am capable of having an independent opinion (rarely do I EVER agree with Roger Ebert! LOL), but I would certainly prefer to come to my own conclusions without prior bias, positive OR negative.

Furthermore, I was accused in a PM last week of allowing a forum thread to influence my comments on one particular photo, which was anything but true at the time. I could deny it, but would the photographer making the accusation ever REALLY accept my protest?

If this photo that you pointed out does win the blue ribbon, do you want the win tainted by similar accusations? True or not, those who do not score so highly may subconsciously console their lower marks by making the conclusion that votes were swayed because of comments made in this forum. To me, this would be a disservice to the photographer.

Thank you for welcome, Renee. I almost resigned my membership because of the accusation I received last week (as it is, I have not been able to bring myself to comment on a photo since), but I'm glad to have stuck around. Y'all take some amazing photos and I just love each new gallery.

Thanks,
Pidd

Hi Pidd,

I decided to remove the reference to the photo and leave it generic. I have edited my previous post.

Best,
Renee

P.S. Where in Chicago? I grew up in Downers Grove...

Response to your P.S.: I work in Des Plaines, live in Wauconda.

Just a few words of bumbling advice - dont take this place too seriously, you have the real world for that.
Hmmm come to think of it I could apply the later to myself seriously ;)

I haven't quite figured out this whole quote thing so forgive me if I do it wrong...again....LOL

You know, I try not to take things too seriously, but I know what it's like to have people criticize work that you're very proud of. I am a dabbler in writing and I have had my work criticized. It can be difficult to swallow--even when you know, deep down, they're right. Our art is as close to our hearts as our families...sometimes even moreso, because it defines to ourselves who we are. It is never my intention to hurt anyone's feelings...but, unfortunately, there is no way to criticize, even constructively, and avoid it 100% of the time.

I'm sure sooner or later I'll get my nerve up to leave some comments. I know how important feedback is. Even if it does smart sometimes.

This is getting to be very serious and real life - I have just about managed to extract myself from a "late quarter life crisis" just figured out that I was too involved with things which are ultimately inconsequential. To determine what is inconsequential is the real test :)

I seriously try to follow what I have put on my bio page.

The mind is quite open to suggestion, wether you realize it or not. What you think is your own opinion can be swayed without you even knowing it by other's comments.

We studied the power of suggestion in a high school psychology class. Our class met during 1st period and we chose three people (not in the class) to "experiment" on.

Throughout the day different people from our class would simply walk up to one of our chosen subjects (when you saw them in the hall or in class) and say things like "Wow, you don't look so hot. Are you feeling ok??"

By the end of the day two of the three people had gone home sick and the third was heard complaining about not feeling well.

Ttreit -- That's pretty scary LOL! I am a very strong-minded, independent person so I wouldn't even think that way in the least with regards to photography and voting... However, when you write about the "power of suggestion" as you did, I can clearly see it and relate to it.

I am glad I removed the reference. Now for all of you who read it earlier -- you are now hereby sworn to secrecy!

My first challenge submission earned a 5.637 with only 7 comments. My current submissions is sitting at 4.6222 with 45 votes and no comments.

I really want to get better at this, but one of the hardest things for me is to critique my own work. The step up from average to good photography can be difficult, so even the average submissions need comments. (You can read that as a plea for help)

Perhaps everyone voting should try to write a comment about every third or fourth photo they vote on, no matter how good or bad they think it is. Since the photos are listed randomly, eventually they'd all get comments on them and everyone wouldn't have to comment on every photo. It's just a thought.
