Shameless pandering to the historically classic artsy-fartsy "Pretty-as-a-Picture" things with all of the feel-good processing that turns the entry into the photographic equivalent of a Hallmark card.

Oh, SH*T!!!!

You guys are gonna hate my entry!

Not understanding "DPC friendly" is why we are on Team Suck. DPC friendly photos win ribbons and score in the 6s and 7s. Soft focus, abstract, or creatively processed photos, will get you comments such as "OOF", "Doesn't work for me", "Not photographic", etc. and low scores (except from TS members, who usually appreciate the above).

Thanks, Raish - what a nice thing to wake up to far too early in the morning! And Evelyn, here at Team Suck we do what we like to do, which quite often, but not always, isn't what does well at DPC. At least in part, the objectives are to have fun, learn stuff, and enjoy the process.

If you want to learn more about what does well here, just go to the "Challenges" selection on the menu bar and start looking through the top ten from each. In general (but not always) you'll find simple compositions following sound compositional rules with good, crisp focus and clean, well balanced color. Nothing wrong with any of that per se - strive for that and your pictures overall will be better than the average snapshot. Beyond that, though, is stuff like the August blur project, where one starts to see that "DPC friendly" is a stable path from which one can venture off onto less-traveled venues. Or something like that.

I've managed to avoid looking at my scores or comments for my landscape entry all week. Getting quite difficult to resist now though as with 20 comments and over 300 views it's easily my most "popular" (during voting) shot. I'm quite surprised. Strangely though I have a feeling it will come in with an average mark. I wait with interest.

Comments WAY better than score. I have two in challenges at the moment and the comments from both don't add up to what you have in one!

(And gotta say that I'm just a WEE bit depressed today. Funny pictures that will make me laugh will be appreciated.)

DPC unfriendly - tilt and overexposure and chopped off bodies

Thanks, guys. By the way, I can only get to my home email about once a day, very early in the morning when the system is slightly faster at work - I have to use a convoluted access method that takes awhile... but in a cruel twist of fate, when I log in here in my abode, I can *see* that I have email, I just can't get to it. Ah, the joys of summer camp....

One of my night-time activities is watching convoys come in (or go out - I never know which). My abode is near the road they use and when you get large amounts of large vehicles going by, it tends to keep one awake. Or wake one up if one happened to be sleeping. But it is kinda cool to watch.

My early morning activity is sitting on the step outside my little half of a trailer and watching the bats. There are tons of bats. They come out when it just barely starts to get light, and then there's a point, before the sun actually breaks the horizon, when all of a sudden they all simply disappear. They're too fast and it's too dark to shoot them, so I just have to settle for watching.

You probably need a good flash or strobe to freeze bat flight. But then it would hard to be inconspicuous which is probably desirable there or here.

Heh! Yeah, I'd imagine a sudden flash of bright light might not be a good idea.

Oh, and I discovered the other evening that you MUST take your gun to dinner (interesting dinner companion) but you CANNOT take a camera into the dining facility. I have no idea why.

I now have this weird picture of you with a cruller in one hand and a .45 in the other......8>)

Here's my funny pic for you.

Going up a little in Rural and now in PB territory. I hope it keeps crawling up between now and midnight Tuesday!

That's a fat score you have going there, Jeb. Possibly ribbon territory, almost certainly a top 10. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

BTW - got a great comment from Posthumous on my weekend FS entry. Thanks, Don!

Edit to add: DPC friendly photos are actually getting more varied, IMO. I've seen some pretty cool abstracty b/w stuff ribbon or come close recently. Nice to see some of the truly artistic photos scoring better. Or, of course, you can just take a stunning sunset shot with some lovely silhouette or get a rooster in nice focus. Yes, I am making fun of myself here.

Results are up for Fast Food and Free Study in the Challenge Results Thread. Congrats to bdenny and Melethia for the top scores; they get to leave comments on the rest of the entries.

WOOOHOOOOOO! bdenny ribboned!

And congrats to you, too, Deb. Nice to see someone else doing well with a spiral staircase! :)

And hey, Jeb now has 5 scores over 6!

Here you go, Deb - my fast food entry, which got 40 comments and 2 faves and scored 5.5 :) So I agree with you entirely about comments!

Well...after dipping to the mid 4's...my "Fried Eggs" FS entry
(ok..ok...you can stop laughing now!!!...hey..I tried something different...lol) ended up with a 5.12 which is still better than my first challenge.
My Urban was down in the mid 4's too but is currently @ 4.98...

Thanks, but I dunno about either from the scores I'm seeing reported.

The ones that aren't are to be reckoned with, too!.....8>)

Yeah....gotta love that!

MAK has *ALL* B&W shots in his top 5, 4 of them 7+.

This is a banner week for me.....I finally got the last shot for my top 5 all 6+.....and it's going to last exactly two days and get knocked off by what's going to be my new PB.....I hope.

Unfortunately, it's my only B&W shot that's ever done well. B&W is not my forte.......so I'll be pluggin' away at the B&W side project in September.

This is the first time I have ever had two 6+ entries running simultaneously.

The longer I'm around you guys, the better I get!

My pleasure! I'm working on the free study entries, but it takes a little while so be patient - I will get to everyone!

My rural image looks set for a personal best, with lots of nice comments (very DPC friendly, I guess; who'd'av thunk it):

What's strange is, my wings shot -- which I like even though it isn't much more than a pretty picture -- is doing better than my Free Study just did. Strange, I say, because all three comments are negative. Guess it's the quiet ones that like it :?

Haven't gotten anything for either open this week; might think some more tomorrow, might not. A bit burned out and life weighing a bit heavy to really get into it. Have even stopped posting in blurred (temporarily, I think). Anyway, best of luck to everyone who's put themselves out there!

Hi all

Sucking along at 4.4 in Rural, mostly cause my landscape does not show any land. Oh well.

Deb, backing Fifi the Ginormous Clyde went well - she doesn't do a thing. Well, I lie, she either goes backwards or plants her big ol' feet so she's not going forward, which sucks! So while she's not shown any inclination to try and dump me, I will have to use a crop behind my leg, which will hopefully teach her that, 'Evil trainer on my back kicking my sides means I am to walk on'.

But what does work is quite funny - Fifi LOVES bananas. So her owner walks in front of us, banana held just out of reach, and Fifi eagerly clomps along after her.

So maybe all I need is a fishing rod and a lot of bananas...

Lea, congratulations! Will PM you, because....

...I, too, am in the process of buying a house! Frankly, I think the offer I'll fly by Mortgage Guy will make him wet his pants, but maybe that won't hurt. :-)

Will soon post links to pix of Fifi chasing after 'nanas with me on her back, and a link to the MLS listing of my new place - woohoo!

I just want to state for the record how nice it is to be a member of such an august, decent, considerate, thoughtful, supportive, inspired group of people having been wandering around on some of the vitriol-filled threads that seem to derive pleasure from making others miserable.

Thank you for having me amongst you.

RobH - hope things get going a bit better for you soon! Always a pleasure to read your posts here and get comments from you (thanks for those.)

Susan - can't wait to see the pics of the banana-seeking horse!

Karen - the PM you sent with the link is a hoot! Good luck with that.

Jeb - we are a good bunch, aren't we? :-)

And to everyone else 'round these parts, a pleasant (but still dark) good morning to you. There's a lady here who's making me get up and walk with her in the morning. Hard on my hips (geesh, I'm getting old!) but it's fun to see the bats and see the sun come up.
