WOO HOO - I have gotten a Canon 300D from a friend who upgraded to another model. I only have the kit lens, but it's pretty good with the little playing around I've done.
What I need from you guys is suggestions for lenses. I'm thinking my first purchase should be a good zoom. I've been looking on Ebay and on the buy/sell page here, so I'm open for suggestions.

this lens is a must Canon 50mm 1.8 only 70-80 bucks

I'll double that, you will find a lot of people on here have opted (most probably for financial reasons) to go for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 over the canon equivalent. I have shot these two lenses side by side and the IQ is almost identical, the build quality of the Canon is superior, but the Tamron is able to take a few knocks (I dropped mine only the other day at a wedding onto a hard-wood floor and it sustained ZERO damage).
However, not sure what your budget is, but I would recommend the 85mm 1.8 over the 50mm, I own both lenses and whilst the 50mm is awesome value for money, the IQ & build of the 85mm is so much better, coupled with the 300Ds crop factor, it makes it a pretty fast lens for distance work.
Regardless, enjoy your 300D, its a great camera and I still sometimes get mine one out when I am messing around. Welcome to the DSLR club!! |

THANKS. I found a Tamron on ebay but there are 4 days to go so I'm keeping an eye on it. SO far, the price is reasonable but you know how it goes at the last minute.

Before you buy on Ebay, check out the price on a brand new lens of your choice first. With the exception of a blue moon, most of these lenses sell for almost retail price and sometimes higher. For example, I was watching for months for a nikon 50mm 1.8 af lens on ebay. For some reason, most of them sold for more than waht B&H Photo was selling them for brand new. I finally just bought it from B&H, for cheaper than I could on ebay. And the shipping was cheaper too!!! Just a suggestion. That way you can keep that sweet black car on the road with the money you save!!! :)

Congrats Judy on the 300D. You have a wonderfully photographic eye... and now that eye can see and do more! Whoopee!!! Now i am never gonna 'blue'!! (as if!!! haha I can't get outta the 4s)
And I also have to agree with the 'rugman'. You can keep an eye on eBay... but do some searching on the Net. Dealing with a photo website may cost only a few dollars more all around, but to have the option to return, have warranty work done, complain to or hunt down someone after you got a bum lens is... as they say... priceless!!

Judy - EXTRA cool with Sugar on top - GRIN!
I too have the Tamron 28-75 - I LOVE IT, although I have to admit that I've never used the Canon equivilant.
I also have the Tamron 17-35 - because I LOVE wide - and it's been YUM!
I have the 50mm 1.8 - but it's a prime and you know I don't like to exercise - GRIN!
I am SO HAPPY FOR YOU!

Megan, when did they officially out it as on obsession? - I didn't get the Memo - GRIN! I thought it was just a little itch, that if I scratched (read two new lenses coming next week) that I'd be fine - nobody told me it would be permanent - GRIN! |

Beware of lens updatus addiction. I started with one sweet little lens, a kit lens. I thought she was so sweet, so perfect. Then one day I walked into a camera shop and there he was, waiting .......a 90 -300mm f4.5-5.6 USM (not the sharpest lens in the kit, but he worked hard for me and has earned his retirement) Then, I discovered another, and another. I try to avoid our local online auctions, and luckily we don't have much of a selection up here in the shops, they have to order in so that helps to keep me under control. But I have L dreams ...................

The lens addiction thing is true. I recently got my first DSLR. I said to myself, the kit lens will do me fine. And it did. For two weeks. Now I'm finding it impossible not to go into a camera shop if I happen to be going by one. And I'm always checking ebay for a good deal.
Still only one lens. I don't have alot of money to spend but I don't know how long that will last. I might have to sell something to go buy a new one. Listen to me, I sound like a blossoming crack addict. |

I would have to agree with the addiction...
I started with the kit lens... then bought myself a 70-300 for range.
Then I started loving to distort perspective so I bought a 12-24... Then I heard about 50mm action and decided on a whim that I should have one... then I went on holidays to an island with a friend of mine and decided a 10.5mm fisheye was in order... then one morning I was shooting street with my 70-300 and decided it wasn't all that so I bought a Sigma 70-200...
Now I want a nikkor 17-35...
more money than sense some might say...
be wary of this :P. |

It doesn't have to be like an addiction. Once I have my 18-200VR, I'll be happy.
I *hate* having to drag around the *other* lens in case I need it.
I have an 18-70 and a 55-200 and they take care of 95% of what I need to do.
Now.....I'm not saying that if I hit the lottery.......8>)

| Congrats on joining the DSLR world! My favorite lens is my 28-135mm .. it seems to cover a big range and it just about lives on my camera! |
