In my job (I'm the pizza man for one of the busiest pizza places next to Michigan State University campus) this is a really bad time of year for me to do other things. I worked about 50 hours over the last 4 days. (yawn) So my question is this. Would YOU post a picture in a challenge just because you got it even though you don't think it will do well? Or do you skip a challenge?

I am skipping. I have no ideas, so instead of put something in sub-par, I'm gonna sit it out.

I'd post it even if I didn't think it would do well. I had this dilemma over my seasonal shot, and decided I'd feel worse not knowing and not being able to constantly click "update stats" than I would getting yet another 4.

I chose to submit, too. Hey, I'll learn more with a less than perfect shot, right?
08/26/2003 01:32:24 PM · #5
If it is a REALLY bad shot, I sit out. If I think it might do ok (I think it will score a 5 at least), I enter.

I don't submit if I can't get a shot that I feel is the best I can do. If I feel it is sub-par, I won't enter it. For example, I spent several hours shooting for the "past" challenge and nothing I got back was up to my personal standards so I opted out. I learn more when I think I have put out my best, others point out things that I missed.

I usually don't enter if I don't think I can find the time to get a decent shot.

But I said usually. I have entered some really crummy photos. Some just to see how they'd do, and others just because I had an idea that would fit the challenge even though I knew they wouldn't do to well.

Here is my theory, which I don't ALWAYS follow, but if I already know what's wrong with it, I wont submit it. If I think it's more or less ok, or doesn't have a LOT wrong with it, I might submit it. I have submitted shots that were less than perfect, but I thought they would do ok on other aspects. They didn't.
Anyway, I feel like why waste peoples time, and take away from those who actually did try to get a great shot. Lately, I haven't been submitting at all.

Mine are always the best work I have ever done, until the voting starts. You never know what you think is sub might be killer to others.

Skip and sit out, unless...

ΓΆ€ΒΆ it's a controversial shot (I wouldn't want to be deprived of one)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ it's otherwise unusual, strong or 'newsworthy'
ΓΆ€ΒΆ you are personally 'attached' to a shot and need the catharsis of a popular vote

Thanks for input... It's time to go to work again (ugghh). And my decision was (drum roll).... Find out in a week! (wink)

haha, reading all the responses saying not to enter something in which you know the errors made me think, and remember a better image I took this week to use =D

But then again. . .I knew the glare on this shot was a problem but, it was the best shot I could do so I entered it and got a ribbon.

Not to mention it's in my favorites!
The glare doesn't bother me.

I won't submit a photo unless I think it is substantively good, most of the time. (I did on some of the first photos I submitted, though.) If I can see a ton of flaws with it already, then I already know what most comments will be. I will submit a photo I think is largely good but not perfect, or one that bothers me but I can't say why (this last category is especially relevant, since comments could really enlighten me there!). I don't stand to learn much if I can already recite so many flaws that I don't think anyone will see past them.

Every so often, I can't resist entering one because even though I know it's not the best shot, I think it's still really cool or really funny. (My entry into Night on the Town, for example.) That definitely doesn't seem to be useful, but I still do it anyway....

I entered two current challenges because I hadn't had time to do a challenge for a while... Not my best work, but they're BOTH scoring my lowest scores ever at the moment. I won't do that again. Ugh.

I find the discipline of trying to submit something to every challenge helpful to me. I will almost always submit something so long as it is on topic, even if I know it has technical flaws.

Not everyone will see it the same way; people may point out other flaws, or good points I'd overlooked. The goal for me is to get feedback on the idea and execution; any ribbon I ever win will probably be due to an outstandingly unique subject (lucky photojournalism), and not for technical excellence.

Alternative way to look at it: consider the challenge an assignment. If you take it, you must come up with something at least. So, there is no going out to take pictures and then decide that they are sub-standard. Too bad, work better next time, but this is what it is. In the 'real' photo-world there would be no alternative but to submit what you have got. In the magazines and newspapers not all pictures are masterpieces all the time. Still we expect pictures and we accept variations in quality.

If you think it's one of those shots where ppl will just quickly click a score and go on to the next (wondering why you bothered submitting) then sit out. Some ppl around here are good enough to take pics that rank over a 6 even on their bad days. I have a shot in right now that I debated pulling out just because it isn't a great shot, but I thought some ppl might find it interesting.

I'm having the same problem at the moment (too busy). I'd rather sit it out than submit something I'm not happy with for the sake of it.
08/26/2003 06:59:04 PM · #23

I definitely sit out and really wish others would too.

This is not because I'm mean or anything, but it's difficult enough to vote on 500 pictures per week. Including those that obviously have no business being in the challenge just makes it worse.

I just think that people would get a better critical response by posting the occasional photo to the forums and requesting feedback. If you post a sub-par image to a challenge chances are it will just get lost in the shuffle and do no one any good.

I've obviously skipped my fair share of challenges (I think I'm at, like, 22 challenges in 14 months) and I only really regret one of those submissions.

I believe the site would be a lot more useful if everyone could practice a little bit more self-restraint.

Just MHO.

I wish i had time always to submit something, but i don't - no complaints, as when I do have the time I have days of it, evidence The Future shot. Almost all of my submissions have been pretty carefully gone over, and usually close-ish to what I was trying to achieve. I've submitted a few because they fit my 'vision' (if I dare use that word) of the meaning of a challenge, despite knowing they'd score badly here - at least being pretty sure - but almost never something rushed, after my first ever entry.

Tools will be interesting: it has errors and problems, but I like the idea, and don't have time to re-shoot (which I would love to do). I love that moment of anticipation when you wonder if others see things the way you do, especially after some time spent getting involved in your subject.

I like the idea to look at it as an assignment.

I might not have the greatest shot but I give it my best effort given the time I have. I'm sure I'll sit out a few here and there but I find the pressure helps me create.

I didn't have any really good ideas for the tools shot til early this morning. I began to work on it and it pushed me to think about it differently and really try for something new. In my work (not photo related) I have deadlines and assignments and sometimes it's an assignment that I dont want to do, that's last minute or that I don't have much experience at. Sometimes I have to "hand in" less than my best effort. But each thing I do makes me better at my job.

I look at photography the same way. I've been trying to enter every challenge and I can say that doing so has pushed me and helped me improve.

I've only been "into" photography for a couple weeks but already I'm seeing differntly.

Finally I think we all see "best" differently. I bet there are quite a few people who have placed surprisingly high on what they thought was perhaps an average photo. Just like we are dissapointed when we think something is awesome and everyone else thinks it's average. I think I can learn a lot in both cases.
