So I've taken a few shots for the rural landscape challenge and they are just BORING. They have pastoral land and some interesting clouds but absolutely no WOW factor.

Anyone have any good tips to share? I need to find an interesting subject or lighting situation or colors.
Also, if say, a barn fills the frame, is that really landscape? I imagine one needs a good amount of scenery or background.

Please post thumbs of WOW rural landscapes to get the creativity flowing.

He has some amazing photos, but he has left and his photos too. Darn! The stuff on his website is gorgeous. Helps to have beauty around to photograph! - Some of us are trying to make "purses from sows ears".

Get up earlier ?

Another couple of thoughts. Don't shoot the sunrise, shoot what the sunrise is illuminating.

Try shooting at 90 degrees to the light source - the colours will be better, the contrast more interesting, the exposure more even. Side light can often be the best light, particularly at sunrise/ set when the dynamic range is lower.

If the light/ sunrise is really amazing and you want to shoot it, do, then turn around.

But sows ears can look halfway decent if tonemapped. :P

Landscapes are 40% the scenery you are shooting and 60% the light that is falling on it...

Take Gordon's advice.

Thanks. I do plan on getting up earlier to snag a sunrise. Great tip about shooting 90 degrees from the sun for maximum contrast and interest.

The best tips I ever had (and don't always follow, lol), is that there should be a point of interest - a subject. Not just "what a nice view."

The subject might be a person, animal, tree, rock formation, whatever.

Here's a good example - lovely high desert at dawn (boring)-

But put my friend Terese in a very similar scene, and even though it's midday, she draws you in -

These are along the lines of what you were asking about "if a barn fills the frame...?" - and I'm not sure if they would get DNMCed or not. I would say the first could be a landscape (barely), but the second (even w/ the mountains over the door) is outside the challenge.
