Gravestone is most definitely a monument. So are stautes. So are photographs on a wall for that matter. Technically, a marriage license qualifies... The question is, how many voters out there are thinking "If it doesn't have a dead general/president/tennis player, on it, I'm voting 1"... It will be interesting to see how people interpert this one.

FWIW, those structures in front of strip malls with signs for the different store are also called monuments. Too late to spur anyone's creativity, but maybe it'll help keep someone's score from tanking. |

Actually gravestones or tombstones are memorials. Momuments can be found though in cemetaries but there really is a fine line between the two. |

Dictionary.com disagrees with you, Anna.
Monument:
"2. An inscribed marker placed at a grave; a tombstone."
er...
I go with them. Sorry! ;)

From the voting so far, I guess a historical significant landmark does not count. Barely above a 4, and it is not a crappy shot (focus, etc.). I guess I will start putting the definitions of the challenge as a title. Think that would help the people who just read the challenge word and vote?
1. A structure, such as a building or sculpture, erected as a memorial.
2. An inscribed marker placed at a grave; a tombstone.
3. Something venerated for its enduring historic significance or association with a notable past person or thing: the architectural monuments of ancient Rome; traditions that are monuments to an earlier era.
4.
a. An outstanding enduring achievement: a translation that is a monument of scholarship.
b. An exceptional example: “Thousands of them wrote texts, some of them monuments of dullness” (Robert L. Heilbroner).
5. An object, such as a post or stone, fixed in the ground so as to mark a boundary or position.
6. A written document, especially a legal one.
ahhhh...maybe not.
