I'm going to go through update withdrawal soon - we're leaving for 5 days of camping (yes, again) just after lunch today. I'll be back on Monday evening.

Take another desert zen shot for rural. |

Hi all,
So much I've missed here, I've read, but haven't had much to say :/ People who know me wouldn't believe that . . .
Congrats to the OOFers for being top of division C; I'm glad after taking out my team in the semis you were able to cap it off with the big win (especially when your opponents had a 6.7 on one of their shots during finals week). Way to go OOFers!!
I like my toy entry, too (it's one of my wife's childhood toys and my daughter plays with it; it's supposed to do well, you know?). It started and stayed in the 4.6 range for about the first 20-30 votes; over 110 votes now, it's at a pleasing 5.26. Clawed it's way up seems like the right way to describe it. Also has the strangest comment, referring to lighting (and being wrong, if I say so myself) and also a rule I've never heard of that I get not a single hit on if I search it -- in any variant whatsoever -- but according to the commenter, I should look it up to improve my image. Strange (and not marked as helpful because, well, it isn't!).
I'm going to shoot both urban and rural, and we'll see what I come up with. I'm not even thinking about fast food; does not even tingle one cell of interest in my entire body.
Hope things are relatively well with everyone!
Best,
Rob |

Same here!! I have one rural and one urban that I like, and I'm having a hard time deciding which way to go. |

So I'm in with toys made it out of the 4's into the 5's. I took it with my new camera thinking that it would make a difference. Guess not, oh well I like the shot. I'm beginning to realize that you can have the best camera out there, but if you can't PP you are going to have low scores. I so don't want to sound catty, because I have learned a lot here, but comments are few and don't always help. I don't comment either on much only if it moves me. I can't comment on PP as I don't get it so how can I tell someone else how to do it. My goals are not so much to ribbon but to beat what I have all ready done. Okay rant over. |

Rosemary, I probably don't have the internet connection stability to help, but there are those here who will - if you have a shot (non-challenge) that you'd like to see what can be done to it using PP, or have a vision for a shot and don't know how to achieve it, please post it here and ask. I can pretty much guarantee you'll get all sorts of assistance! I know that I tend to underprocess a lot, but by sharing my shots with a few others now and then, I do see what other possibilities are there. I don't always like those possibilities, but at least I see them. And then sometimes I WAY overprocess, too - and like the results.
Your best bet it so play alot - go wild, try different things. Wickedly overprocess something then go backwards a bit and see if you like something inbetween.
And don't forget that the most important viewer is you. :-) |

Oh, and sometimes photography is just taking a quick snapshot to remember a moment....
Christian, you were right - after the initial shock wears off, there is a lot of beauty to the desolation in odd ways. Very difficult to photograph well, though, but the barren nature of the place does kinda grow on you after awhile.
And on odd occasion, you get treated to sights you might not see in, say, Texas. Or you might...

I hate when that happens! Then if it doesn't score well I think I entered the wrong one. |

Just wanted to spread word here about the great deal on CF cards at Costco. They're only Ultra 2 cards, but at $20 for 2Gb that's still a sweet deal.

Are you salty? Would you like to be roasted? There are lots of different kinds of nuts here... we currently have one baking in the Middle East, a pistachio, I think... |

Probably more like a peanut, though I prefer almonds. I have changed locations. I do have internet, though I can't get to my email (grrr...) nor can I do the Yahoo IM thing with mom. Grrr again. But there's a HUGE difference here - it's like coming to a big city from a small town. People and vehicles going everywhere. It's big. It's bustling. I understand things go boom on occasion. I have to carry a sidearm which will drive me freakin' nuts, but there's a sign at the dining facility that says "No pow, no chow". I do so like the free food part. (Oh, and I did take a trip out to the desert where I did indeed kill a defenseless cardboard box, just to make sure I could fire said sidearm, but also to learn how to load and most importantly unload said sidearm.)
It is slightly cooler here, though that's relative. LOTS of NO PHOTOGRAPHY signs which I find quite rude. I don't think that'll totally stop me. I'll just try to look reasonably official as opposed to sneaky and furtive. |

Deb, I know with everything else going on, you must have a lot on your mind, but I so much appreciate hearing from you now and then; whine if you want to, report if you can, but keeping in touch at all is really appreciated.
Hi, Evelyn, welcome!
Kelli, um, hm, well, um, I hate to tell you this, but . . . well, um, see, you already are a photographer, see? And have been. This (as but one choice of many possible) proves it:
:)
Seriously, though, congrats on your position, your access to all sorts of wonderful toys, with a wish of energy and purpose as you go forward (that's a 40 year old guy's way of saying, "You go, girl!").
Terri, "if" it doesn't score well? I know exactly how to pick the one that would score worst of the two; I enter one, and that's it :)
I actually think I'm out of luck for an urban shot, and if the weather holds, I won't even get a rural one (though I'm surrounded by rural right now). Fingers crossed, please, I found a really great site today on my drive, but nothing worth shooting given rain and horrible lighting on a scene for which those two qualities detract rather than add. I'm still looking, though!
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Best,
Rob |

Hey, guys!
Just an FYI.....I met Eve ephln during the Floral side project and she's not a nut, she's a fruit.....a peach, that is!
VERY easy to get along with and most supportive of friends' work.
A little hypercritical of her own abilities......where have we seen that before.....but an eloquent and effusive commenter.
I see she has already stopped by!
You'll like her!
