I have seen this discussion here at times in the past, but I can't come up with a definitive answer...
I'm looking for a good online publishing service where I can get the photo books for the "Traveling Compact Flash Card" project published and made available for purchase online. Asuka Books won't be an option. The cost is too high.
What services have you used and how happy/unhappy have you been?

I've used Blurb for a hard cover and Lulu for a soft cover (both documented in the threads listed here).
I also just ordered a book from MPIX of a wedding I was second shooter for which I haven't received yet.
The main issue I have run into is layout software. I've found that doing my layout in FotoFusion helps considerably since the variety of software is wildly inadequate in this area.
Price to quality so far in my experience has to go to Blurb.

I have a book I ordered from Blurb and do not recommend them at all. I am still very dissapointed over the print quality of the pages. The dustcover is cool and really allows you to add a lot about the book. The page designs are ok.
I downloaded the new MPIX software and can't way to order a book from them. They now offer a 10X10 hardcover. But, I will miss the book cover. The linen paper and printing quality that I trust will make up for that though.

I have Aperture (Mac software), and this is an option with this software. The layout is quite easy to do and Apple use Kodak for the printing. I have done one book this way and although probably not the quality of some of the more professional printers like Mpix etc, it was pretty OK for the price.

I'm currently looking at lulu.com as the possible best option. I don't think that MPIX gives me the ability to make the book available for everyone to purchase. Lulu.com gives me a storefront where the book can be viewed and purchased by everyone.

I used blurb for an 80 page softcover. The quality was OK for the price and anyone can order it. What makes it good is that it can be ordered soft or hard cover once it's published. The cost for the 80 page was about $23 (plus shipping). The software was easy to use. |

Okay, so yesterday I got the album/book I ordered from MPIX. It's nice, but I doubt I'll use them again or I'll be more careful.
What I ordered was a 10x10, 26 page book on linen paper with a black cover. They have an option for having text pressed into the cover. This I didn't try.
The linen paper I don't recommend. For the set I did it added a lot of noise. There might be cases where it works (I have a B&W, mostly white bouquet image in the book that looks nice), but I made a wrong choice with that option.
Some of the images in the set span across the centerline with poor results. 3/8" from the spine is a score making the pages lay better when you turn pages, but this also eats 3/4" worth of images if they cross the centerline.
The cover is paper. It's not quite the quality that you see of the Blurb fabric cover.
$30 for 20 pages. $.50 per additional page.
My total including shipping $38.
