I just got a new Acer Aspire 3050-1150 laptop, running Vista Basic, and it only came with 512 MB of RAM, which just isn't enough to do normal things, much less run PS CS3. I've tried several searches, Google and RAM search engines, but I'm having a hard time finding this model listed - like it doesn't exist or something. So I'm a bit vague on what RAM to buy, and a bit wary of just walking into Staples and going on whatever they tell me.
Second, I can't afford to upgrade to the full 2GB right off, but I could buy a 1GB stick. So the question is, since I have two slots, can I put the 1GB in one slot, leave the 512 in the other, and then have a working 1.5 GB of RAM? I thought I read somewhere once that RAM will only work at the lower of the two levels, if they are unequal, but I wanted to check and be sure.

I believe most laptops use a standardized ram be it ddr or ddr2 in a smaller stick then what they used todo where every manufacturer had their sdram configured differently.
Should be able to tell what ram it uses based off the processor's exact model. Not 100% on that. But if its DDR or DDR2 i believe the laptop versions of those are the same in most laptops now.
The Size of the ram doesnt matter as far as matching pairs, but the speed does. DDR400 ram with DDR333 or whatever it was. It will run at the same speed of the slower ram. SO If i have PC2700 ram in there and and add PC 3200. The ram will not operate at a frequency higher then 333mhz (PC 2700).
ETA Google CPU-Z it will tell u what cpu, motherboard ram, speed size and soemtimes even manufacturer in each slot.

LOOK HERE
Most places that sell memory online know what you need and provide tools for locating the correct ram.

Acer Aspire 3050 Specifications
Either DDR2 533 or 667---using the 1GB+512MB option would depend on the dual channel operations.

Thank you all, this is exactly what I needed!
I had been in the Kingston search already, but had accessed it through the Staples.com page, and it didn't have my model listed there. Go figure. But now when I open the case tonight, I'll know what I'm looking for, and be able to head to the store!
Thank's again!

You need AT LEAST 1 gig of RAM to properly run Vista. I don't understand why stores are even selling machines with less on it. |
