I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find it right now.
What are some helpful tips and strategies for getting good shots when you visit an aquarium???
If you know where the link to the other discussion is, that would be good too.

This site has archived articles on photographing your own aquarium and public aquariums.

I would suggest calling the public aquarium and see what restrictions there are on photography first. i.e. flashes, tripods and etc.
The one tip I have read numerous times is "go early and stay late."

What Calvus said.
Additionally, sometimes a polarizer will help reduce glare. Stand off-center, so that you avoid reflections (at least of yourself), unless you are recreating a scene from "Jaws." I have to deal with an auto-focus camera -- I think being at an angle to the glass helps it focus on the subject. If you can't use a tripod, try bracing the camera on a pillar or wall.
I have a few recent photos from the Tacoma Zoo and Aquarium here.

Whenever possible, put your camera right on the glass then u don't need a polarizer.. .polarizer in those lighting conditions will slow your shutter down too much... |

Good point. I took quite a few shots down into some of the tanks, where the polarizer would have helped reduce glare from the ripples, and there was more ambient light. |
