I finally got around to registering a domain and now I need something to put on up there. I really have no idea about writing/designing websites but how hard can it be for a computer literate bloke with plenty of time on his hands...
Whats a good program for me to start with? I really only want a simple page with some contact details and a bit of a portfolio. Free is good but I'm willing to pay a little bit if its really needed. Oh yeah, needs to work on mac.

If you can find the codes somewhere, all you really need to make an HTML page is WordPad or any other word processing application. The codes and be found online I'm sure and also in books. That was too much work for me so I went with a WYSIWYG and in the end, I bought a template for about $60 and modified that. Good luck!

ah yes, actually writing the code myself. Really I would prefer a nice graphical user interface with minimal brain activity requirements. Is that possible? |

I'm sure it's possible. What you want is a WYSIWYG then but I don't know of any free ones. When I did my website, I used Dreamweaver 8 to work on it. It is NOT cheap though.

I use one called Pagebreeze that I got for free on download.com. Allows you to work directly with code or WYSWYG interface. |

I've learnt a new word - "WYSIWYG" - so if nothing else this thread has done some good. Anyway I think thats what I want. Now I know what to search for. |

I will tell you the best hands down program you can use. TextPad. You can download it free at TextPad There is a 32 dollar registration fee, but you don't have to pay it, only if you decide to keep the program. But the trial never expires.
This program is best for HTML and for JAVA. The text changes color as you use the various brackets. This helps you to know when you forgot to close a bracket.
You can't go wrong with this program, it got me though my JAVA and my HTML courses with ease.

ETA: Sorry, didn't see that you needed it for a MAC. But all the Windows users can still check it out.

Just an option here:
If you would like a free html editor with a huge bonus try the mozilla Seamonkey browser.
Seamonkey is the new name for the full suite web browser that used to be called just Mozilla.
If you've used Firefox or Netscape then seamonkey will be very familiar.
It is a free open source program.
No spyware or adware and it is far more secure to use for web browsing that Internet Explorer (should you decide to use it for that purpose also).
Seamonkey is a web browser, email client and html editor (called composer)
You can run it on macs, windows, linux and other operating systems.
The seamonkey download and info page is here:
//www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
I quickly googled for a few info pages
(There could easily be better ones available)
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Composer
or
//eportfolio.sfsu.edu/tutorial2.php
or
//tutorials.ausweb.com.au/hosting/Tutorials/Website-Builder-Webpage-Editor/
And as a closing note its always good to check out the wiki to see what else is available.
