Scores for Light and Paper are in the Challenge Results Thread. It was a quiet week for Team Suck, with only 3 teams qualifying for scores.

Just want to let you know that two of us suckers, Silverfoxx and me (blush, blush) beat Larus this week in Natural Light Portrait.

Christian, thanks for the pointer; I signed up. My last side challenges, two months back-to-back, left me a bit worn out, but now with DPL over (for me, at least, thanks to a stellar round by the Out of Focusers; good luck this round, guys!), this sounds like fun.

Way to go Julianne and Svetlana, excellent shots in the natural light portrait challenge. I can't believe Julianne actually got four twos on hers :/ I think the rules here allow me to grumble on her behalf. Grumble. Grumble. The two threes for Svetlana's aren't any better (or any more deserved). Anyway . . .

Jeff, thanks for the tutorial links; I'm still not sure I understand tone mapping (I thought it was a step separate from HDR, but the tutorial seems to merge the whole thing into one process; can you tell any HDR I've tried has come out awful? Still learning . . . ).

Best,

Rob

This is something I don't understand either. I almost always get ones and twos on my shots, even the ones that score well, and there is never a comment to explain why they thought the image was so terrible. But when you get four 2s, it's hard to pass it off as troll votes. I wish these voters would let me know what they don't like.

Feh. Just accept that someone really didn't like your shot or really thought you missed the challenge theme. That shouldn't really surprise you; no one can please everyone. Then ignore them, secure in the knowledge you did connect with some people. :)

Speaking of which, the audience for this shot will be small, but I predict a higher percentage of team suck will enjoy it than in the general DPC population:

I think they are separate steps. Here's my 30-second understanding:
1) Cameras can't capture very bright (but not pure white) and very dark (but not pure black) together, so you can't have detailed brights and detailed darks in the same shot (the tones just darker than white and just brighter than black are what give you those details).
2) If you shoot the same scene at lots of different exposures, you can combine them to create a file that does include detailed brights and darks simultaneously. That's an HDR file. Note I didn't say "image," because ...
3) Normal monitors and the JPG format also can't display the full range of brights and darks simultaneously. So you do "tone mapping" to cram a zillion tones into the smaller range that's displayable. Intelligent software designers have figured out various tricks to do that, taking advantage of how we see color distinctions to get rid of the ones that don't matter, thereby reducing the number of tones necessary to display the image.

Here's an example I just made up. Imagine you can see 8 colors simultaneously, and you're trying to display an image that has 15 colors. If you were red-green color blind, it might be that 7 of those various reds and greens look the same to you anyway, so you might as well convert them to the same color. Then you'd be down to 8 colors, and you could display the full image in a way that would be accurate to you.

Similarly, I imagine there are fine color gradations our eyes/brains can't detect anyway, so they look the same to us. Although an image actually has all those variants, there's no need to keep them all in the final image.

Does that make any sense?

Greetings Team Suckmates! I believe it's Week 2 RWT (real world time) here in the desert. By my count, I think it's about Month 2 DT (desert time). Yesterday was a special treat - HUMIDITY! Yes, indeedy, after trying to learn to deal with scorching (literally) air and 119 (F) temps, we got humidity in the near 100% range. They didn't issue oxygen tanks, so I'm considering growing gills to adapt. With luck, we'll go back to scorching air. It actually is much nicer.

Got to take my camera out for a bit yesterday, taking pictures for work. As they're not very exciting for other than workmates, I probably won't post any, but I gotta say that it was nice to feed the addiction if only for a short bit. I *REALLY* miss being to go out and shoot. I miss the cats most, but the going out to shoot part is a very close second. I can live without just about everything else. I suppose that's one of the nice bennies of this tour - determining essential elements of one's life. Seems photography is one of my essential elements. And I did discover that pointless though it may be, a shower is a luxury. For five whole minutes, I'm not sticky. :-)

Humidity is to heat what wind chill is to cold. As you are now in the part of the world where the Old Testament happened and the books were composed, you have an unenviable insight into why Hell is hot.

Deb, must see amphibious version of you...glad you got to take pix, and I certainly feel fr you missing your kitties, I miss mine when I'm away dreadfully. But at least you have your photo addiction to keep you sane. Glad you're safe and sound, hope it stays that way! :-)

*off to go swimming in generous client's pool now...ahhh.....*

BTW plan to be in Stones, have the shot already composed, just have to go shoot it now, put new cam to work!

I have been going back through some of my pictures for the last years and processing some of them. I have been finding some "overlooked gems". Here is one I think is pretty neat that I first overlooked a year ago.

From Chicago:

So what do other Team Suck members have for "overlooked gems"? I would love to see them!

Great shot, Jayson!

I almost threw out this one, good thing I opened it on my monitor first, instead of relying on that dinky camera screen - it's now one of my personal favorites.

I got a nice comment from Melethia on my Rhythm shot, which most people don't like. Thanks Deb.

Great to hear from you Deb; you miss taking photos, I miss seeing yours. I'll be counting the days with you until you're able to use the camera regularly again.

Jeff, yes, I think that makes sense, but then that does seem like it's all part of one process, as you can't do an HDR without tonemapping. So when I tried photomatix, I have no idea what I did wrong that the final product looked downright awful. Will have to read a bit more and try again (perhaps with PS).

As for Julianne's four twos, no, there probably isn't anything to learn from them. But I still wanted to grumble a bit on her behalf, as there is no way anyone thought the photo was DNMC (and if they did I'd like to have a little chat with them), and I can't imagine any other reason to give it a two. Four twos, no threes, and no ones. Grumble. Now I'm done :)

I've got something (too many somethings, actually) for street photography II (need to pick), and am actually contemplating a free study entry (gasp) -- but I promise not to whine if it ends up sub-5 :)

Enjoy the weekend, all!

Best,

Rob

One of the forgotten images with my first digital camera.

I just wanted to thank noraneko and Melethia. They both made my day today. I can't say how right now, for the sake of anonymity. But thanks!!!

We aim to please. And Don, I owe you thanks as well for a fine comment on my Rhythm shot. I'm attempting to vote that challenge, but I'm not sure I have time to finish....

I did get to go off-post today briefly, but the pictures are all best suited for the blurry thread as I shot from a moving car and most are, well, very blurry. Still, got to shoot - that was kinda cool!

Oh, and Rob (rheverly) - with Photomatix, you let it do the HDR on a single image (if that's what you're working with) then tonemap (in Photomatix) that image. The HDR by itself is indeed hideous. With the tonempapping, try the default setting first, then cut back on things or increase things to see what you like. It's very much trial and error.

Melethia Couldn't find any cats, couple of birds on water, just to get you out of the desert for a brief moment.
Deoderant must be a big seller over there with all the humidity.keep smiling.

Thanks, Brian!! Looks lovely and cool and wet! And they're beautiful birds. I was kinda surprised to see birds here - little sparrows now and then. I hope it's cooler when they lay their eggs or they'll fry, not hatch. It was 122 degrees here for most of the day yesterday.
