What are most people happy with. I lucked out on my first challenge and got a 6.5 and when I suddenly dropped into the 5's I wasn't happy anymore until I got another 6. So far...6 for me is good. If I can beat 6.5 then I'll consider that great. If I can get into the 7 (Which would hopefully mean a ribbon) then that's BEST. 8...I doubt I'll get there unless trolls have completely been eliminated from DPC and I suddenly develop superhuman cameraman abilities. |

There is no one answer to the question. Some people have never seen 6.0 after dozens of entries. Some people are disappointed by anything under 6.5.
I'd suggest that if you need a score goal, try to beat your running average; that would show continous improvement.
Now, note that I'm defining "continuous improvement" in this context to mean "meeting what the bulk of DPC voters are looking for," not necessarily any abstract meaning of improvement.
DPC is one community; there are others with very different tastes.
And if you're interested in connecting strongly with at least some small group, then focus on your comments, favorites, etc. and not the average score.

Considering there's only been 9 8/8+ scores in the past year (and two of those were in this year's small April Fool's speed challenges), I'd say that if you can get an 8 you've got it made.
Anything in the higher 6's and over is great here. |

And a 5 is good for some of us :-D |

6+ should always be considered a good score, but aim to beat your average. That way you compete against yourself.

Anything above your average. |

Yeah, I kindof have always measured up against my own average, but really have not cared nearly as much about scores this year as I did last year :) |

Yeah...I started with a fluke good shot so my average started at 6.5...so it's been hard to beat. My average keeps going lower and lower. I guess eventually it will even out and I can aim for that. |

the better question is what is a good average? and what average do you need to be looked at as a good photographer? |

Beating your own profile average is always a good score because each time you succeed, it raises the bar a little higher and forces you to work harder for the next shot. If you make that a serious goal and really make the effort to beat your average, you will improve over time (at least within the eyes of the DPC voters). |

I think the conventional wisdom is that a 6.0 average after say 40 or 50 challenges is quite good. Not to say if you don't have that you aren't good, but people tend to post little threads when they reach this milestone.

Not necessarily a bad thing to be "out of sync" with the voters, but it does get a bit frustrating.
I tend to look at placement in the particular challenge more favorably than score. If I place higher than 75% I feel good about the outcome.
is good to have too :-)

man , i got to work, i guess to get to that 6 average, scoring 6 all the time is not enough i should aim for those 7's then:( |

Am I right in thinking that you are currently raising your average yet higher with an entry in Rhythm? |

I got a sneezy in Personification II, but I admit I had to scour Jason's profile page to find it! Not quite a fair game... =D
My avg over all 37 challenges just broke 5.60, while my past 20 challenges have averaged 5.71, and I'm pretty happy with that trend.
While a user's scores are not a good measure of a anything meaningful, I have to admit that when I receive a comment (whether criticism or praise), I visit the person's profile page and their photos and scores give weight to (or reduce the weight of) said comment. Edit: I typically look at their top shots, not their average score.

Wish the avg score were calculated on a rolling 12 months or something. With 15000 votes in the bag, even a fairly long string of 6+ shots barely makes a dent. |

I would not agree with this as a rule at all. This could also say that you never take a chance. sometimes good photographers submit stuff they like but won't do well. Boysetsfire's avg is in the 5.5's as is Bearmusic's I would venture to say that they are very good photogrpahers. looking at someone's avg doesn't tell you how good they are. Just because someone doesn't ribbon every other week doesn't mean they aren't good. and honestly the opposite can be said as well. |
oh trust me i agree with you , i 've been working very hard to catch up with the big players here, my last 10 entries average about 6.17, where as my overall average is sitting at 5.5 |

the original poster was asking about a good score - not what determines a good photographer - you've done well to explain the difference.
