Okay, so most of my comments for this picture for Natural Light Portrait said that Candles are not natural light.

I really disagree with that. Fire is natural. Would you say that sunlight is natural? Of course you would. Well, guess what, the sun is a big ball of (guess what) fire.

I'm not complaining much about the score, I'm happy with the picture and thats really what counts. But, I'm just really astounded that people would not consider fire/flame as "natural" light.

Am I missing something here?

If I had voted on your image, I would have given you the benefit of the doubt, but I would tend to agree that candles are not natural light.

Electric sparks are natural light sources too. But not one of us would say a lightbulb is a natural light source. The candles are man-made and intentionally placed to light the subject. Nice shot, but no.

Edit: FWIW, this is coming from a guy that used flash and umbrellas in his shot :-)

I could see fire if it was 'natural' fire - caused by lightning for example which would be hard to prove with just one photograph perhaps. But candles are not natural. It is a man made product, it requires intervention by a human in order to produce the 'light.' JMO...

I think by natural people took it literally as THE SUN. Almost all entries used the sun in some way to light their image. It's unfortunate that some would argue that a fire is not 'natural'...but then again, if you light the fire with a man made lighter, and then light a man made candle...one might think it IS man made in a way. It's not 'electronic' by any means...just my 2 cents.

I also thought this was a great shot, and gave it a 7... Its a nice think outside of the box picture. The problem is, at DPC sometimes you have to be very specific. So if it doesn't look like whatever everyone else considers Natural Light or Outside, it gets the DNMC remarks or a lower score. Don't let it discourage you though, because like I said its a great shot.

The sun is not "fire" -- is is nuclear fusion. One is a chemical process involving oxidation (oxygen combining with other atoms to form a new molecule), the other involves hydrogen atoms being smashed together to form helium atoms.

Sunlight is found in the environment spontaneously -- your candles exist only through the intervention of humankind, so I'm not surprised at the response from this group of voters. That doesn't mean anything regarding the quality of the photo itself, which I think is well-done, merely it's suitability for this particular challenge topic.

Perhaps one of the challenges of Natural Light was that you could not move or alter the light source. While I can see your point, some people may not have felt it met the "spirit" of things in that you could move add/subtract whatever light you wanted.

As I recall, before the challenge, there was even discussion about the use of reflectors etc to aid lighting. So I am not all that surprised that your image received the comments it did. I personally liked the shot, thought it was inventive and well done, and gave it a 7.

I'm shocked that this scored 5.3077. I had the very same idea (to use candles for my natural light), but didn't have time to shoot and had a good entry already...I'm glad now that I didn't shoot it! I would have never dreamed that fire wouldn't be considered natural light. I feel your pain Mark, it is very hard to predict what the masses will think...

I gave you a 9 if it makes you feel any better :)

I don't think candles are a source of natural light myself, i've not seen many in the wild.
