Yes, I need a push.. my selection is between these four..
The digital rebel has many plusses.. including the auto focus system, second hand market of canon is big in Iceland and so forth.. but the big downside is how small the screen is!
The K100D is six megapixl, Shake reduction, 2,5" screen and I have some old film lenses, but the downside is.. six megapixl and the lcd status panel is not backlight!
The D40 I haven't been able to try, thanks to the lousy shop here, but obvious plusses are good kit-lens, big screen etc..
The Fuji 9600/9100 has a good 28-300 lens, but a small screen, and is only an SLR like..
So, if you were choosing between THESE four.. what would it be? |

by the way the Fuji has a 1/1.8 sensor in it it is TINY, the same size ud find in an ultracompact camera and their iso 1600 noise is horrid. But other then that the manual focus ring, the barrel zoom, the 100% crop mode, face detection and flipup screen are nice. |

Don't let the 6MP sensors put you off. It's not as limiting as you might think (unless you're planning on A3 enlargements!). In fact, the lower pixel count can sometimes mean less noise. |

Technically, there's nothing in it. If you already have some older lenses, then it's cheaper to stick with the same system. The only other criteria you can use is which one do you like the feel of in your hand, the D40 or the 350D.
Whichever one you choose you'll find a world of difference moving from a P&S to a dSLR. |

Good luck choosing. I'm sure you will be happy with whatever camera you go with. I look forward to seeing your DSLR images. |

I just made the jump today. I'd pretty much planned to go with the 350D, but once I had a look at one in each hand, hmm'ed and hawed over the pros and cons, I decided to give the D40 a try for a couple weeks.
I'll let you know what I think as a new DSLR user :) |

Lol, sorry Leroy. But hey, I have a two-week trial, I might end up not liking it! |

Nikon or Pentax.
If you plan to use just a zoom then go the Nikon. If you want to use primes, (even a cheap 50mm f1.8), then go Pentax.
Go the Canon if you care more about brand name than money.

Yeah, it's probably the best kit lens out there. |

Canon. You won't have any lens limitations with the 350D and the used market for lenses is huge, like you said. The Fuji won't have the same low light/low noise performance of a real dSLR so toss that one aside if that's what you're looking for. I'm not familiar with the Pentax line so I don't have much to say about that one. If you do end up with the Canon, skip out on the kit lens and go for something better right away.

Well, Canon is problably the way to go since the nikon market isn't big here.., what would you recommend as a kit - lens replacement?
I was thinking Sigma 17-70?
Any other lense, maybe cheaper?

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 SP, you won't be disappointed with it. Not as wide, but has a little more on the long end along with the beautiful constant f/2.8 which is very nice to have. Later on you can back it up with a 12-24 or 10-22 and a 70-200 of your choice. Great lens to start with for about $330-$350 USD.
