could you please recommend the best (affordable) wide-angle lens for a 5d?
i only have one lens: 70-200mm now, and i think it would be great with one more, a wider one.
sigma 10-20, canon 17-40 and 17-55 are what i am thinking about after reading the forums here.
is there a big difference between 17-40 and 17-55?
could you please recommend something?

Get the 17-40. That would be plenty wide on the 5d. The sigma 10-20 won't work on the 5d.

It's an EF-S lens, only for APS-C cameras (D-Rebel, 10/20/30-D).
Won't work on the 5D
The Sigma 12-24 is the widest non-fisheye lens available with full frame coverage. |

I have the 17-40 4.0 and love the lens, but would rather have 16-35 2.8. I am addicted to 2.8.
The 17-55 2.8 is a EF-S lense, they don't work on the 5D

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is a large-aperture lens specifically designed for EF-S type digital SLR cameras, and that offers a super wide angle to short telephoto zoom range, with built-in Image Stabilization. The focal length is equivalent to approx. 27-88mm in 35mm format.

Go to B&H or Canons website and read the specifications for the lens.
Also if you go to B&H and the description says "for select digital cameras" it means it's for EF-S mounts only.

either 17-40 or 16-35mm
the 24-70mm would still wide but not as wide on a 5D |

BTW, for the other manufacturers, they will typically say "for Canon Digital". That generally means EF-S type - will not fit the 5D.
Since you only have the 70-200 now, you might think about what your total package goal is. The Sigma 12-24 and Canon 24-70 might be a good combo. Or, if you only want one lens, the 17-40 (or 16-35) might be the way to go.
I'd probably borrow a lens if possible to see exactly how wide you want - is 24 wide enough for you on the full frame, or 17, or Sigma's 12.

Partly correct. From what I've been reading, manufacturers like Sigma don't actually make EF-S mount lenses. They make lenses with smaller image circles. They're standard EF lens mounts, but they project a smaller image on the frame, so a Sigma "DG" lens could be used on a full-frame camera, but you would end up with severe vignetting. |

| the 10-20 won't work on the 5D. I think you should look at the 17-40L and the 16-35L as well as the sigma 12-24 which is the widest lens i know about for canon that isn't a fisheye. |

i don't really know the total package goal yet:)
i thought i would do well with only one lens ever: 85mm 1.2
but then i thought it would be great with some variety.
and since i don't have much space, wide-angle something would be nice.
i take portraits and some street things. i'm not into landscapes or macro (not yet:) |

Here are two shots with identical settings. There is quite a bit of difference from 17 to 24. Vignetting doesn't seem to be a big issue with either on the 5D. Don't get me wrong, there is some. If you stick a standard polarizer on them, it then becomes more of an issue. Somebody said the thin polarizers help eliminate this but they are expensive.

awwww. come on. you know you love the 17-40 :) I've never let anyone but you use that lens, but I admit it looked real good on your camera. you're destined to have it. :P

Some of these "digital only" will fit on a 5D. Some will fit, but the rear element projects into the camera body and will interfere with the mirror. (and possibly break it). For example, the Sigma 18-200 fits on the 5D, and works on the 5D, but the image circle it projects doesn't cover the whole sensor.
Silverfoxx, what do you mean by wide? a Nikon with 18mm lens would give a FOV about the same as a 27mm lens on your 5D. So the Canon 24-70 or Tamron 28-75 or Sigma 24-70 may be wide enough for you.
There is a comparison of lens coverage at //forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=11982207 , you have to click on the picture to see the whole thing. While its for a crop camera, the relative sizes should be the same for a FF camera.
The Sigma 12-24 will work on a 5D, and gives nice pictures. The Canon 16-35 and 17-40 are "L" and probably have better IQ than the Sigma, but there is a big difference between 12mm and 16mm.
Depending on what you're shooting, consider a few primes-they are usually cheaper than zooms. And the 50 f/1.8 is almost a "must-have" lens.
Alternatively, panoramic stitching software will let you make wider pictures of landscapes and still objects, but you should start out with something wider than 70mm. :) |
