Know what I love most about that image? The fact that it fooled so many people who thought this was digitally done yet it's simply a picture of a mannequin. I thought this was extremely creative to pull this off this way.

Let me ask this. Do you think this image would've placed as high if this was a sci-fi challenge under advanced editing instead of expert?

We have lost our fellow Pentaxian.... anyways

This bites the big one!

Darn. I was hoping to pick his brain on Pentax because I have seriously considered getting a k100 or a k110 to use as a kickabout DSLR.

Oh well. At least I have access to the Buy and Sell forum again. (my membership was lapse for awhile... it happens... ppl came and ppl go, and sometimes they come back! You never know.)

I was in on some of that last discussion and I didn't quite understand why he was as frustrated as he was. He had already made the switch to digital, yet he was bemoaning the purity angle.....I didn't quite get it.

He was intelligent and articulate, and it seemed to me that he was just ready to move on. It seemed a little like the whole EE thing was a convenient reason.

We all know that pure photography will always have its place, but you cannot, nor have you ever been able to deny progress, like it or not.

There is plenty of room for both in an open-minded world.....and I see that here, despite the grumbling from both sides of the fence.

BTW-this is NikonJeb mistakenly posting as my daughter....forgot to log out after viewing her kicking my @$$ in the Free Study.

Yeah, totally agree, when I eventually leave DPC I will not have my account closed like that, I think it´s a bit over the top and feels a bit like slammin the door shut when you leave a party, personally I just want to leave quietly when I decide to leave.

Shame about Glen though, talked to him once through Skype and was a pretty nice guy and will miss him but I totally understand why he felt he needed to leave.

He didnt slam the door shut as he left.... he quietly picked his things up .... tiptoed off into the wilds of Canada.

I understand why he left, and support his decision. I can still email him, admire his work elsewhere, and kick his ass once in a while :)

Di, when you're talking to Glen can you tell him thanks and hi from me. And kick his ass for me too will ya, there are a lot of cool favs disappeared from my list!!!

ETA and when you've KA, give him a big hug from me

I'll kick his ass any ole time you want :)

Hmmm. I don't think the Artyste would have run off with with the likes of Paris Hilton....

Sorry to hear, but whatareyagonnado. I'll miss him, too.

When I leave pemanently, I am burning the place to the ground on the way out. Sorry, but that's just how strongly I feel about burning things.

Regarding the digital art - I think it's much ado about nothing. While I understand the concern about the direction of the site and I, myself, can only take so much DA, but why not stick around and continue to participate in the challenges that DON'T "degrade the integrity of the site"? Why do some people feel that everything needs to be fair to them or revolve around their preferences? Expert editing has never been proposed as something that would replace any other rulesets. As someone mentioned - something for everyone - but some people want everything for themselves.

Ah well, such is life.

Good luck & God Bless Glen, wherever you are.

Interesting. I gave that a 7 because it met the challenge very well not because there was a perceived high level of editing done to it although I did think several photos were used. I actually commented that the "fans" didn't fit and looking at it further and reading the photographer comments it looks like when the background was darkened the fans were masked out rather hastily. So to answer your question if this was another challenge it would probably have gotten the same score from me unless of course the masking was better. :P For me all that matters is the look of the end product and not how difficult the shot was but I'm sure that's not how most people vote.

I will miss Artyste also, he was one of the first to welcome me to the DPC community. He aslo helped me a few times with post processing and also was one of the first people to choose one of my challenge entries as a favorite. :(

I hate when this site looses good people like him.

Best of luck Artyste.

Jeb...

From what I felt, Glen didn't bemoan the progression to digital as a photographic medium, but rather what was done AFTER the photograph was taken.

Anyone who is/was really into film photography loved everything that could be done after the developing of the film was done. Whether it be a little burn or dodge here or there to improve an important picture, or heavy-duty enhancements to get rid of a zit, blemish or whatever.

I can see both sides of Glen's argument. I was in film for over 45 years, but, seeing what can be done with Photoshop and it's brethren, well it excites me.

Maybe what it all boils down to is I am not the photographer that he is so I look to Post Processing to help me to impress the ladies!!!

We will miss ya, Glen!

He could sure argue intelligently and many of his points were hard to disagree with, but I think he felt misunderstood or perhaps disgruntled because he had a somewhat purist mindset and he felt things were becoming too digitized, even though like art roflmao said, there are many mediums in which to particpate. Perhaps he felt he was evolving, or rather, being here slowed down his evolution, which can happen if too much of your energy is focused on challenges and editing photos. You gotta just step away from things sometimes. Everything doesn't have to be permanent in life. Just like people, some are there forever, some for only a short time.

It seems the Artyste left a week too soon... Natty Light Portrait wouldve been right up his alley...
