I often worry about my camera bag being stolen from under my feet because I'm too busy taking photos to notice the thief.

To prevent that, I'd like to buy a proximity alarm. It is a two-part system, with a receiver that is somewhere on my person, and a transmitter that is attached to the bag. If the two get separated by more than (insert adjustable distance here), an alarm goes off.

I once bought one from Sharper Image, but it wasn't very good. It took far too long for the alarm to sound, and even then the beeps were ever so quiet, so I returned it :-(
I want an alarm that is quick to react and plenty loud enough.

I googled for it, but the ones it came up with (precious few choices, by the way), didn't sound like they matched my requirements and/or didn't get very good reviews.

Perhaps I should write to B&H and suggest it......

Do any of you clever people have any wisdom to share?

maybe get some twine and tie one end to your belt loop.........

you need one of these. A lot of us use them for our laptops - but one in the camera bag makes good sense.

Motion Sensor:high and low sensitivity modes; triggered when device is moved; if motion continues for 4 seconds, alarm will sound for 40 seconds, device then resets to âarmedâ status

Aren't they going to be pretty far gone after 4 seconds?

That is exactly what I AM doing when I'm in a very crowded and busy situation, but I had hoped for a more elegant solution ;-)

Thanks for showing me that type of alarm, but I don't think it is what I need.
It sounds like 4 seconds is plenty long enough time to hop in a car or run off, and needing to unlock the alarm every time I want to move a few steps would be a nuisance.

I know you can get them for kids, so maybe a site that has baby monitors, etc?

I like the alarms that set off a pager that's on quiet mode. If you are shooting a wedding or some other event and your 120 db alarm went off in your camera bag, even if it was someone stealing it rather than you got to far away from it... that would kind of ruin the moment for the people around you. A silent pager that vibrates that you have on her hip or around your neck will let you know that someone has taken your bag so you can react. And if it's a false alarm then only you are the wiser.

This is why I wear a waist pack when I shoot events. The camera bag never leaves my side but my hands are free. If I'm moving through crowds I can swing it around in front of me so it doesn't bump people (you have to be careful swinging it behind because someone can open and grab without you knowning).

The tether on a spool, like the retractable key chain is also not a bad idea. You don't have to have it cliped unless you set the bag down and it gives you some room for movement.

If all else fails and they still get it... put a dye pack in there like the banks use so it goes off when they open the bag. ;)

You could just pony up the money for a guardian angel system. It is a GPS tracking device that they use on kids. It can be put in the lining of your bag so if it does happen to be stolen, they can track the progress of the bag and the thief. Unfortunately, it won't tell you the moment the bag is stolen, but at least that way you have a chance to get it back AND it is discreet :)

Kind of like Lo-Jack for your camera LOL

Sheila - I tried that, but those ones have the above mentioned limitations.
Steven - that's getting close, but why can't I find them over here?
Mike - I haven't come across any such pager, would you have a link to one?
Johnna - interesting idea, but awfully expensive :-(
James - I'd rather attempt to stop them from stealing in the first place.

Thanks for trying, everyone!
I'm still hoping to find the exact right thing, not ready to give up yet :-)

How much stuff do you have? I have a camera backpack that carries a body with a lens, room for another lens or two, and a million little accessories. Just put it on your back and it's not going to wander off.

Man, I love having LoJack on my Mazda RX-8
makes me feel better, they told me the average time from theft to recovery is 48 min!

I do hope someone finds something that would meet the requirements expressed by Beetle as I would love to have some kind of apparatus to would let me know if someone tried to abscond with my equipment.

My company is working on such a device and it would be useful to learn more about potential applications. We have prototypes that will be ready for testing by Oct-07

If this is something of further interest please send me an email to the following address (please note that I've formated it to minimize automated computer harvesting)
