Well it looks like typhoon Man-yi will be hitting us tonight. Which most likly means no power, no A.C., no internet, no DPC :( (who's got the crying smiley). The only saving grace is that I don't have any images in the challenges so no update button to worry about. It's supposed to be here all of tomorrow too...man the room is gonna get hot and humid, yuck!

I will try and get as many photos as I can but once it gets to the island we are on lock-down and can't even go outside...yeah like that stops anyone. Luckily I have a westernly facing window on the 3rd floor.

See you all in a couple days...have fun and be safe!

Sounds like it is time for a Typhoon Party!

I was there in 96 when Kirk hit is really bad. We had the whole eye of the storm covering the island. There is an awesome satellite photo of it.

Everyone here is already pinging about the Typhoon and it isn't even projected to hit us. but the outer lying cloud bands will probably swamp us with rain again. Last year half our base was flooded and most of the flightlined was submerged. The binjo ditches were insanely flowing.

Best of luck to you. Hope you already bought all ofyour bottled water because I am sure the commisary is already out!

No, I was thinking of this shot. But I saw it better without the grid lines.

Good luck Scott, and stay safe. :)

Good luck Scott and stay safe. I have been through many hurricanes, two of them category 5 in which I was at the center of (Camille in Biloxi and Andrew in Miami).

This one doesn't look to dangerous from a max wind perspective but I don't know what kind of terrain you are located on and if you have concerns about storm surge or landslides.

I'd offer some advice about preparing for it but being in the military you are probably pretty prepared safety wise. However, it might very well be uncomforable for quite some time if you lose electricity for a week or so. You'll have no air conditioning during a particularly humid season and possibly limited drinking water if the water treatment facilities don't have a backup power supply. I use garbage cans insulated with a plastic bag, a blanket, and then another plastic bag to safely and cleanly store 200 gallons of drinking water before a hurricane hits. I offer this tip because, other than collecting 200 jugs of water, this is my unique way to have plenty of water that I have never heard suggested before.

I hope that you this storm passes with as little compromise to your safety and comfort as possible and that life quickly returns to normal for you.

Yah man stay safe...

Back in '82 we would strap the newest nooby of our unit in Oki to something on the roof and have him/her stand "Typhon Watch" but I guess that would be hazing today...

The rest of us would head for the nearest bar, because when lock down hit there was nothing like being locked in a bar (with buy me drinkie ...) for a day or two. :)

ED: to change '92 to '82 it didn't look quite right.

lol so you're the reason we're locked on base lol j/k. Yeah when I was here in 89 we'd have typhoon parties like mad. All videos gone from the vidoe stores and all the pb&j you could eat lol. Actually come to think of it, maybe we're the reason we're locked on base lol. They even stop selling alcohol at typhoon condition 1 to make sure people keep their wits about them.

yakatme...good tip, I just wish I could do the same with electricity in the barracks, I recorded a few shows but that does no good without power.

Be charging all your batteries, and your laptop if you have one so you can continue shooting for a while, and save some for the days after the storm, so you can get those shots too.
You can charge batteries by using a car battery or cordless tool battery with a small light bulb in series with the batteries to be charged if you or someone you know are good with that kind of stuff.
Alcohol is good for bathing if there is no water available after the storm.
Keep us posted when you can. Good luck weathering the storm, and try to stay safe.

well it's 6pm and barely a sign of the typhoon. The sky is full of pretty fast moving clouds and we have had barely any rain. The weather people say it is about 5km from us. I'm gonna try and get pictures every couple hours but still pretty boring now.

That'll be Taifu Number 4. I guess we'll get another twenty or so this season (they won't all pass over Okinawa, of course.) ;-Þ

I hope that wasn't you that was mentioned as being injured falling off the roof! :)

Powerful typhoon in Japan injures 7

Good news is the number of people injured in this seems to be quite small. Now they need to get the power back so we can hear back from sabphoto soon! Hope all is well.

We should feel the effects here over the weekend as its projected movement is up the east coast of Japan. In fact, it just started to rain (lightly) at 10p.m..

Did you mean 50km? Heck, the eye alone is probably 5km across!

Anyway, stay safe!
