I got this phone call last week from 1-954-840-3631 and they told me I won $1000 shopping spree. I said oh really, well i'm not interested in buying anything. The guy said all you have to do is pay $1.99 for shipping the vouchers. I said if you can afford to give me $1000.00 then you can afford the the two dollars for shipping, CLICK!

So today I get a call from 1-727-252-0519 and the guy told me I won 4 hotel vouchers and 2 airline vouchers. He knew my name, my bank, my routing number, and my address. He said that I had won all of this stuff because I had a bank account and all you have to do is give me your account number so I can verify that you have an account. I said are you kidding? Do you really think i'm going to give you that info? He kept going on and on blah blah trying to convince me and I said there was no way in hell i'm giving you my account number.

So I called my bank to let them know so they could put a note on my account for suspicious activity. I only use my bank account online for BG&E (electric bill) and Comcast Cable/Internet. It was a little freaky knowing someone had my info like that.

BTW they are calling my cell phone!

Did they actually have your full account number or did they just say they did and asked you to confirm it by telling them your number? maybe they didn't really have it. I hope not! Good Luck. change your account ASAP too.

Your routing number isn't particularly secret because it's based on the bank. So anyone with an account at that bank can see the routing number for all accounts.

They probably got your info from the car dealer that sold you a car that you may or may not actually own.

Bank routing numbers are incredibly easy to get. Somehow these people found out where you bank and matched it up to your cell phone number, from there it was pretty easy to get your address. It may also be that they got your name and cell phone number and then somehow determined your bank- could be as simple as making a call.

I investigate fraud all day long- for a private firm. It is amazing what people can come up with. You did the right thing by notifing your bank. The number you posted goes back to a landline in Clearwater Florida. They can't do much with the information they have, they need you to supply the missing pieces. If you give it to them they'll drain your account in hours.

Or if your mortgage is through your bank. That info is easily available. I get refinance requests all the time for my mortgage with the bank and amount of the mortgage on it. Someone could assume that if you have a mortgage with that bank you may have an account there too.

Actually, account numbers aren't so secret either. You give it away every time you write a check.

My parents got a strange phone call one night around 11:00pm. The guy on the other side basically just asked if my dad lived there and hung up. On a gut feeling my mom called the bank's 1-800# a few minutes later and someone claiming to be my dad had just called and transferred a few thousand over-seas. My mom actually had to fight with the lady on the phone to get her to believe that my dad hadn't just done that.

Somehow whoever it was got through all the security questions and codes to gain access to their account. It had happened before to my parents so there were even extra security blocks put in place. It's amazing how much people can know about you.

Well, yeah, but that's not online or at least not as easily found, or they wouldn't have called to ask for it!

All those memes on MySpace? Virtual goldmines for the answers to most banking security questions. I'm not figuring your parents have MySpace profiles, but it's something most people don't think about.

and
Article about extortion scheme listing phone #'s
