That using selective colour is better than hue/sat? I've been playing around with it recently and have been astounded by the difference, especially in clouds. Any input?

Not sure in what context you are using it. I use it as part of black/white conversion process and find it ofers much more control over tones than the basic hue/sat method.

I used that a lot! Also color balance. I vary between the 3... I'm not sure why or when I choose which... (tongue twister). Maybe there is a hidden method, and maybe I'm just doing it on a whim.

I like to pick the blacks and make them blacker in a lot of my images. Easy way to get more contrast without blowing out colors.
