No way! Anyone what happened to Glen? He was a breath of fresh air.
07/07/2007 04:47:21 PM · #3
He asked for his account to be closed. I can't, of course, discuss his request, although I think it is fair to say that no specific problem caused his departure. It does look like his departure is permanent.

Sigh. I hate to see people leave, but I really hate to see them close their accounts and take everything away, too. They could delete their portfolio but leave the profile page so we could see the challenge entries...

Sad to see him go. :(

He did often lament the percieved direction that the site seems to have gone to quite often, so this should probably come as no surprise. Still, sad to lose anyone...

Shame - his work was outstanding

No, it's not a complete surprise, but it's still a disappointment.
I often disagreed with his opinions but I respected the way he presented them and I admired his dedication to his craft.

Lately he had been concerned about the direction of the site. This was a post to that regard recntly:

This is a pointless bit to add really, as I never advocated getting rid of such, just making it much, much, much more separate. I know this site too well, if digital art work.. which "realism" in photography could never compete with on that all important mass market WOW scale that DPC pretty much *lives* off, is allowed to be incorporated on a scale like this latest challenge shows it's capable of.. well, it's worse case scenario obviously, but it's really quite disappointing.

Left behind!? There are still painters in this world. There are still wood carvers. There are still people that make mosaics out of rocks. Nobody is being "left behind". Every art form is viable and relevant in its own right, and to take the stance that because another art form is the "new thing" means that anything else is old hat, obsolete, or in any other way "left behind" is a little silly.

I think I actually left an idea on how DPC can use good business sense to offer a way for Digital Artists to thrive. Hmm.. Yup, I did. On the second point, if you truly go through the entire Sci-Fi challenge, I challenge *you* to find me (once it's done) 10 examples that are "photographic by nature".

I simply feel that this is a warning sign that we need to heed.. but by all means, if the majority rules and wants this kind of work to become an integral part of DPC, then by all means.. that's what is going to happen.. but I'm not going to sit back and just let it go without voicing my concerns. I was drawn to this website originally BECAUSE it wanted to try and preserve some integrity in the photographic process... but I guess if the masses only crave WOW, then this road was inevitable.. you can only wow people with the same cookie-cutter bullshit for so long.

Hey if your not woried about being left behind, and you want to try and preserve some integrity in the photographic process, then why did you purchase 4 digital cameras and why aren't you shooting film?

*sigh*. This has nothing to do with *anything* that I've been talking about, and if people want to continue to be idiots and muddy the discussion with inane statements, there is nothing I can do about it.

Definately someone I will miss. Pretty much the only reason I stuck on and off for the 2 + years I have been here was because of him. He got me hooked on Pentax and I have never regretted it. Definately will miss his wit and sarcastic humor.

Not good. I agree with him, sorta ...

Yeah, totally agree, when I eventually leave DPC I will not have my account closed like that, I think it´s a bit over the top and feels a bit like slammin the door shut when you leave a party, personally I just want to leave quietly when I decide to leave.

Shame about Glen though, talked to him once through Skype and was a pretty nice guy and will miss him but I totally understand why he felt he needed to leave.

He didnt slam the door shut as he left.... he quietly picked his things up .... tiptoed off into the wilds of Canada.

I understand why he left, and support his decision. I can still email him, admire his work elsewhere, and kick his ass once in a while :)

Can't say I blame him but it's too bad in any case.

I also hate that he left, and he is probably the beginning of things to come if we keep this expert editing CRAP active. I have no desire to create digital art, and I can't really see spending good money to keep supporting a site that does. While I have grown to love DPC immensely, it is not the only photography site going out there. I really hope that we all get out fill of this expert junk and it quickly gets tossed aside. After all, this is a site that boasts being "a digital photography contest," not a digital art contest. Glen, we'll miss you. Hopefully no one else has to follow along.

Eric, Glen was disenchanted with DPC long before EE came along.
07/07/2007 06:33:03 PM · #17
I never really had much to did with Artytse, but I did think, when I saw the front page of DPC, that the top 3 from the Sci-fi challenge didn't "belong" there.
They just don't seem to "fit" with the rest of DPC.

That's all :-)

The EE challenges aren't being offered exclusively. There are no fewer of BE and AE challenges to make room for them.... it's just another of the many photography flavors offered here.
07/07/2007 06:52:55 PM · #19
i'm sorry to see Arty leave but he's still in chat and we can see him there from time to time. :)

as far as expert editing goes, i honestly don't think it takes anything away from DPC at all. if anything, it adds another dimension and welcomes more creativity. after all, it's not as if expert editing is the only type of challenge being offered. personally, i don't participate in it because i'm really not that good at that type of editing, but i think it's wonderfully artistic and i admire those that have the ability. by the same token, though, i loathe minimal editing and i know there are many here that think that is the ONLY type of challenge we should offer. i think what we have now is a nice balance that offers a little something for everyone. isn't that the best of all worlds?

What was wrong with second place entry? It was a mannequin from a storefront window and it appears all that was done besides monochrome and toning was to black out the background. I have no problem with the EE but can see how many people could.

it is a bummer when someone decides they don't want to live in your village anymore, but if you don't get away from home every now and then, it's pretty easy to take what you have for granted.

as for the site changing, hell, it's been changing since its inception...and people have been complaining about the changes for the past 5 years.

not everybody loves every model that chevy and ford make, but they keep offering new models in addition to their old standbys, just to make sure they are reaching the broadest markets possible. and when some of those models turn out to be utter failures, they stop making them.

The thing about Artytse is that he is one of those who swim against the current. He has, as far as I can tell, used well-reasoned and compelling reasons in his forays against whatever trend he examines.

Whether one agrees with such people or not, they are important to the health of the site. I will miss his posts.
