Not sure if ACR for CS supports the XTi. Try to update it, if that works it should fix the problem.

Try going to Adobe's Update Page and get a newer version of their Camera Raw plugin. I had to get the newer version when I installed Elements, because the default version wouldn't read the XTI's files.

| I have a similar issue with my XTi. When I take RAW+JPG pictures and drag/drop them using explorer to avoid date/time changes I get two JPG pictures the same size, for example one named IMG_1498.jpg and one named IMG_1498(1).jpg. I went through Canon web/email support, and they recommended using the Canon EOS Utility software. When I do it does create larger .CR2 RAW files, which I can open, however it modifies the date/time of the files to transfer date/time, which disqualifies any DPC entry. How do you all move unaltered RAW files from camera to computer? I will go through phone support when I get a chance if I don't find an answer. |

OK, I downloaded and installed the latest Canon OES Utility for Windows update (and DPP and ZB updates) and rebooted. It is still doing the same thing. The EXIF data for the date/time the picture is taken is correct, but in Windows Explorer the Create, Modify, and Accessed date/time are all the transferred time. After an hour on the phone with Canon support and going over and over this the support person assured me that his does the same, and that is correct. He says the photo contest site should accept the "Shooting Date/Time" EXIF data. Is he correct or full of BS? The first time I got through to support I explained the situation and the guy immediately said "You can fix that by..." and my crappy phone lost connection. Does anyone transfer RAW files with all original date/time, and how?
Thanks,
Boyd

I don't think you can see the Exif data in Explorer while it's in the RAW format. Once you convert it to .tiff or .jpeg, you can.

I reread the Transfer Software Guidelines sticky and discovered if I put my CF card in one of my USB card readers *edit* and drag and drop *\edit* it maintains the original shooting and modified date. It's just the transfer software that sucks. I'll just do it outside the camera for now. Maybe I'll try the RSE software later, just so I don't go on a shoot with my CF card still in the computer.

I know it's not part of the main question, but if anyone wants to be able to see their RAWs in Windows Explorer, check this out.
//www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/raw.mspx
comes in quite handy.

| thanks all for your replies,it seems that i have to upgrade to cs2 to open the files, after reading some articles it seems that each company has its own raw format " i didn't know that before :)", can't they just make a universal file format & make things easier for everybody ! |

Yo Boyd are you using Canon Digital Pro or the zoom browser stuff? Trying to figure out what you are doing? Date taken in EXIF doesn't change when move unless it is some crummy software. I use DPP and Windows drag and drop all the time. Date Modified/Created don't matter here cause if you place in the top five the SC will ask for your original and read the Date taken out of EXIF.
Side Question: I was looking at your bio... UNIX geek for a co we have all heard of....Hmmm, you work on Sorrento Mesa (we might be neighbors)

Actually there is a "universal format". It's called DNG. Problem is that Adobe is the only one that uses it... LOL
There is the Adobe DNG converter that would let you convert the files and use them in CS

If you have Vista, then RAW support is native to the file explorer. Vista was created to allow support for RAW files today, and any other versions of RAW for new cameras that will come to market in the future. With my Pentax, RAW file viewing in XP was pretty much non-existent, but with Vista, they all appear perfectly and I can view the EXIF info!

I was connecting my XTi with the supplied USB cable to the computer and using EOS Utility to transfer files, but that changes the modify date. If the EXIF shooting date is good enough that may be OK, but to be safe I think I'll just drag-n-drop off my multi-memory-card reader. Until I at least get in the top 50% I guess I don't have to worry about being in the top 5.

I used to work in Sorrento Mesa, but not at Qualcomm. Now I've moved North a ways. I'll PM you more details if you want.
Thanks everyone for the help.

While thats kind of true, I still had to download a plugin (3rd party, not even Microsoft since they don't have their act together) because Vista wouldn't show my CR2's. |

Actually there are a number of manufacturers that support DNG RAW in camera. Cameras from Hasselblad, Leica, Samsung, Pentax and Seitz can all write native DNG as the RAW format.
Hopefully Canon and Nikon can follow suit in the future to help avoid these compatibility problems.
