I am now back from my two weeks in Hawai'i on vacation. My whole family had a great time on Oahu and the Big Island of Hawai'i. While on Oahu, I got to meet up with staab for dinner - what a blast - gotta love the friendships gained by DPC!!!!

We explored all over, looking for black, white, and green sand beaches and waterfalls and all sorts of other cool nature like stuff - way cool! We then headed over to the gorgeous and 'deadly' island of Kaua'i.

This is where I discovered that salt water and sand and big waves do not go very well with a D70...

My wife was on the beach sunning a little, looking out at the waves and watching the boogie boarders cut up the breaking waves. I took a little walk (leaving my camera on a blanket on the beach next to my wife) to get the kids in their swimsuits. I looked up from the car to see my wife walking towards me with a look of shock... In her trembling hands covered with sand and water, was my poor baby Nikon. A thumper of a wave came out of nowhere and pounded my wife, my camera, and all our stuff on the beach. She (and my wife too) were covered with sand and salt water...) I quickly took out the memory card and battery and tried to see to the damage. I dried off the outside - removed as much sand as I could from my black beauty and cringed as I put a new card and battery in - no signal, no response, no pulse...

I will be sending it in to Nikon tomorrow to see if they can fix it - I'm not real hopeful - but I did get a pulse (the camera did come on after it dried off)- but it won't read memory cards right now and the LCD appears to be toast...

What do you think are my chances of a full recovery?

If not, which Nikon should I go for?

Why is the D70 model so particularly hydrophilic? This is like the third thread in a week where someone's D70 ended up getting soaked.

hmmm. almost enough to make me think twice before I go out in the kayak tonight! I am pretty sure my D70 cannot swim either.

I think that was intentional. Ya know, sink or swim. ;oP

The S could also stand for salt/sand meaning it attracts it. ;o)

Dropped my first one in our hot tub. Instant Death of the beast. I took it in for an insurance estimate the next morning and the corrosion had already began. Thanks goodness for insurance and the full cost replacement policy. I sure hope you had that.

ETA: Grab the D200 if the budget allows. That is one awesome camera.

Was this your home owners insurance? Or separate insurance for your camera equipment?

the D200 can swim better I heard. If you feel like buying 2 and passing one my way, feel free.

I'd really like to hear this too. I always fear losing/damaging my camera. I want to know if I have any protection in terms of insurance.

I'm calling mine tomorrow to find out - my guess is that many insurance companies have different approaches to this kind of thing - and it depends on you deductable and how you set up your coverage.

I hadn't really thought about the D200, but that sure does sound tempting. And the body is only 500-600 more than the D80 - I could almost swing it, if I get some money back with insurance coverage.

Now I am beginning to hope that my 70 has died...

Most insurance companies will offer either an extension off your homeowner's policy (or renter's policy) or they will offer a separate "Personal Articles Policy" in addition to the homeowner's policy. This is often very inexpensive.

This coverage is also usually "all risk" coverage (will cover dropping, breakage, water, etc) and should have a low or zero deductible.

One problem with getting this coverage on your personal insurance program is if you use your camera equipment for any kind of business use. The business use will usually prevent you from qualifying for placing this coverage on your personal insurance program, forcing you to obtain a commercial (and more expensive) policy.

Thanks for the advise. If my insurance doesn't already have this coverage, I will add it.

Ouch - really sorry to hear about this, if your looking for a new Nikon I'd say go with the D200, I upgraded from D70 and its an absolute diamond for literally everything.

Also, not wanting to be the bearer or bad news but I believe salt water is an instant kill if it gets into the electronics.. :(

Good luck
