How hard is this? Either take a picture of land, or take a picture of the ocean.
07/01/2007 12:35:02 AM · #52
I have no ocean within 3 hours of me. Therefore I have to shoot for the land challenge. And no lakes...so therefore...I shoot land...simple!

What is the arguing about...don't you lot have anything better to do with your time...like going and putting some low scores on some challenges...oh wait...some members are already doing that.

Never mind!

Unless, like in the 'Wildlife' challenge where it was expressly written that 'NO ZOO'S' were allowed, some of the photographers 'tricked' the voters into thinking that they're shot was NOT taken in a zoo. So, for this challenge it has be have at least part of the ocean in it right?

They could always do the land challenge.

Then why in the 'Land(not sea) challenge do the details mention 'no oceans or giant lakes for this one'?

If I understand correctly, one is land with little or no water and the other is water with little or no land. I think.

Actually there's 3 days left to shoot.

Oh yeah, thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking about the 'Weekend' challenge which is over tomorrow. And after tomorrow, I won't have any more chances to take photos 'till next weekend...or maybe ever?

Hate to butt in, but how much sky is typically allowed in a Landscape image?
07/01/2007 08:01:54 PM · #58
Hello -

Sorry to go a bit off topic. I'm pretty new to this site, and am looking forward to submitting a picture to this challenge...but I'm not sure which category it best fits into. I was wondering if anyone could help.

Url removed per comment. Please let me know if you wouldn't mind reviewing my image and let me know what category it might fit into.

When I took this shot, I was planning on submitting it for the landscape challenge, but today when I was fixing to post the image I noticed the "large lake" rule. I don't feel it's a water image...but figured I should try checking here first.

Either way, comments are welcome on the shot. I'm new to photography, and love how these challenges have me walking around all the time thinking about how to/trying to learn how to shoot different kinds of pictures! :)

Challenges are supposed to be anonymous, so generally if you want help beforehand just ask if anyone would like to look at your shot (and then not vote on it). Then you can send that person the link privately.

Also, so you don't inadvertently get DQ'd - no text can be added to images you submit (in case you were unaware).

Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know that about the text. I'll def. remove prior to submitting.

I updated the posting and removed the url. Thanks again. :)

Ordinarily I'd say a seascape or landscape can have as much sky as the photographer wants; sky is a normal component of the landscape. In places like the desert or the high plains, sky is often the most dramatic part of the landscape. I would worry, however, in this more narrowly defined challenge, that a sliver of land/sea and an ocean of sky would not be well received.

Just a gut feeling.

Thank you for your reply. I think I'll heed your advice about the amount of sky in this challenge!

Would I be voted down because I edited a photo in "Portrait Mode" for the "Landscape" Challenge?

No. Mine's in portrait mode, actually. And to everyone else: I did NOT enter "seascape" :-) The weather/light did not cooperate at all.

i'd expect a sudden un-submission from "land", and a surge in "sea" :P

Nah. my entry is just a placeholder. If it reaches the 6.0 level I'll be surprised. Weather has been blah and I have been uninspired for the past month. Only clear light is in the midday. And as y'all know, I live for the golden hour, which of course has been resolutely un-golden lately.

When I went looking for a nice image for seascape, all the nice framed- by-land bodies of water were mudflats, as I managed to go out without checking the tide tables.

So tell me, would this then become a landscape?
07/03/2007 11:21:26 PM · #73
actually i was thinking, this is not a seascape or landscape challenge.
this is about land, and sea. i'd be expecting pictures of boats, ships, or anything closely related to sea or land.
07/03/2007 11:58:48 PM · #74
I'm expecting pictures of mountains and sunsets over bodies of water. Living close to nothing interesting, I did my avg vote received a favor and showed some self restraint...

edit expecting 'winning' pictures that is
