Does anyone else here own a MarkIII?? I picked mine up today and I'm just looking for some helpful tips that you may have figured out already. It is an amazing camera. Best money I ever spent...well except the 5D, that was good money gone also.

Probably the same reason Catherine has a 30D and still lists her 20D...? Question is was it worth it to be a traitor?

Yup, I've had mine for a couple of weeks now (enough to finally feel fairly confident with it). It's quite a beast. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or PM me.

Some quick tips:

1) Take the time to get to know the custom functions. There are a ton of them, and they can really shape the camera to your needs.

2) After you've become pretty familiar with each of the menu items (and custom functions), consider creating your own custom menu. I find it to be extremely handy. You can put the things you use most onto that menu. And if you create a couple of custom function "sets", it will make it very easy to "switch modes". For example, from the settings you would use for portraits, to the settings you would use for candids, to those you would use for sports. Very handy functionality!

3) Practice single shots while in High Speed mode. It's got a hair trigger that'll fire two or three when you only meant one. But if you get used to it, you'll be able to fire single shots when you want, or multiple shots when you need it. (and be prepared to see the shocked look on others faces when you hand your camera to them to take a picture and it ends up taking 3 or 4)

4) I've found center-only AF point to be most accurate for non-moving subjects (portraiture). And center-point plus AF-assist to be best for moving subjects (sports, etc). Your mileage may vary.

Those are a few tips to get you started. Let me know if you have other questions.

David - I'd be very interested in hearing which custom functions you have set. Your shooting style and subject matter is very similar to mine.

I have played around with some settings and I have to admit they were not for the best. It was either this or I am showing problems with the auto focus. I will try the camera out again this weekend and see what I come up with. To date I can't find the setting to make the AF button become the focus.

Nick be careful of the extension system terminal cap (just above the battery compartment on the left hand side of the camera) - both David and I have lost ours. David have you found yours or were you able to get it replaced?

Were the AF problems apparent only in warm daylight conditions ?

As your probably aware there's much talk about AF problems on the MkIII's at the moment.

bazz.

No they weren't - it was last week in the rain in Sydney and the temperature was only about 16 degrees. I've been following the problems closely and at the moment being winter here, temperature isn't/shouldn't be playing a part.

So does this mean you have some Nikon gear to unload?

Right now, I figure everybody is going to be selling the camera for the same price. It's too brand new for any discounts to be found anywhere. So I just went into my local Inkley's (Ritz Camera) and purchased it directly from them. I do a lot of printing with them, and I get discounts based on $$$ spent with them and so I'll be getting a ton of free prints based on this one purchase. :-)

Oh ... so the cost was approximately $4500.

I haven't even had time to talk to them about it yet. So I just stuck the big silver one in its place for now.

I paid $4448.87 for mine at a local shop. I scoured the U.S. looking for someone with one and nobody had seen anyone that had any in stock. There is a small shop in Oceanside that I all but forgot about and figured what the heck. Turns out they were getting one the next day and the guy who ordered it didn't put a deposit. I plunked down the full price and picked it up. They get one per month from Canon and I cought them at the perfect time.

rswank: Yes I do have some Nikon stuff for sale

SB600
Nikon 70-200 2.8
Sigma 24-70 2.8
Off shoe cord SB29 I beleive
I have a couple other lenses I have to check on which they are. And of course a D70 with the Armor kit.
