Silly question, I suspect the answer's going to be No but I thought I'd ask before I go to the trouble of shooting my Sci-Fi pic.
Under Expert Editing, would it be allowed if I printed off a photo not taken by me (and not under copyright), held it in front of the camera, took another shot of it, and used that shot as a small part of my submission?
It sounds very dodgy when you put it like that and as I said, I reckon the answer's probably no but I thought I'd ask anyway. The only reason I ask is that I have an idea but it involves taking a shot of an object I won't be able to put my hands on one of before the challenge deadline.

I thought you could use other people's artwork as long as it wasn't a literal interpretation but I just rep-read the rules and this is what they say: You may not add graphics, clip art, computer-rendered images or parts of other photographs to your entry or its border during editing. What I don't understand is whether they mean straight up copy and paste or what you are thinking of doing. I think that what you are thinking of doing is OK because it's a picture of a picture but do not take my word for it. Can someone in the SC clarify this please?

Hmmmm- I'd ask site council. The rules seem ambiguous in a way. Graphics? That is open for interpretation.

As suggested, open a ticket and ask the SC. However what you've described sounds no different than Scalvert printing out photos of circuit boards and the like and incoporating them into his shots so it doesn't sound as 'dodgy' as you think. To me at least.
I think the graphics rule sort of went out the window when people started hand drawing birds in their photo anyway. |

How is it not copyrighted? An image is copyrighted at the moment of exposure. It probably isn't registered, but it's certainly copyrighted. |

There are LOTS of photographs that are not copyrighted. Either they were taken long enough ago that copyright has expired, or they were taken by the US Government and were always in the public domain. In fact, the Library of Congress has a whole online catalog of photographs that are in the public domain, freely available for download to do whatever you want with: LoC Online Image Catalog

True, just make sure it's one of those images then. ;-) |

Actually, this question was asked by another user and was answered as follows:
Using an outside-sourced image as a *physical* element in a setup would be OK; Using an outside-sourced image directly as a part of a multi-image composition is not legal, however. All images (except those which appear as part of a physical setup) must be your images, and shot within the challenge timeframe. |

Then I guess that brings up the subject of artistic brushes.
