OK, I've stayed up to watch the Colts win and to see me lose ;) Here are very few outtakes from the technology challenge.
I'm looking forward to seeing others!

I really like the black and white shot if you had been able to get the mouse still and the logo in the shot too. |

All of my outtakes are similar to the one I submitted. I liked different things about each of them, and in the end, submitted one that didn't do so great! ;-)
Outtake One Iliked the colors and such in this one, but was afraid the 8 track wouldn't be easily recognized.
Actual Submission This is the one I submitted. I felt the focus was the best in this one. Didn't realize until it was too late the record "tracks" would not show up on most 'puters. Live and learn. I also felt the sharper colors would help it.
Outtake Three This was perhaps my favorite one. I felt that it had the best composition, but I couldn't get the lighting to do what I wanted, adn some of the colors were washed out, and it had a nasty glare in spots. The LP looks like grain, as well, to me, and it seems to be leaning to the left.

Hmm... all of my technology outtakes are pretty different from my submision. I'm curious if any would have done better than 4.6... |

What it's supposed to be (the title reference) is to the "Black Monolith" which appears in the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey -- an alien device planted here on Earth which imparted to apes the ability to make tools. I used fountain in its context of "font" or "source" rather than of decorative waterworks.
What it actually consists of is a block of styrofoam sitting on a black garbage bag full of (clean) laundry, with the tone range highly manipulated and inverted.

Here is the one I likely should have entered. Although considering this was my very first DP challenge entry, I can't complain. HOnestly, I am nothing short of shocked that mine came in that well. Beginner's luck, I guess.

Congratulations! I think for this challenge I like your submission better -- the beautiful and detiled reflection in the outtake makes it a little busy for me and harder to focus on the the building itself. Of course, if the challenge was something else (like the recent "reflections" challenge) my opinion might be different. |

I actually didn't have any outtakes for the tech challenge. The one I submitted is the one I felt was the best of the 200 shots I took....
I just wish I could understand why it didn't even make it in the top 50%

I did quite well this week (21st) but I had a hard time choosing which one to submit. It wasn´t easy. What do you think? Here they are! |

Well, the only neg. comments made were about the leaves in the way and the wheel not being clear enough. Glad you liked my personal pick best!

Here is a "Links" outtake (not cropped just resized). I also made an attempt to take a photo of a computer part: Wired.

These are the OUTTAKES THAT I DIDNT SUBMIT. Note that the first 4 images in the folder were shot with my Olympus E-10.
The rest were with a 1.3 mpx Powershot A10. $199 last year from State Street Direct : ) .. I had fun on this one.
But I think I should have submitted one of the engines ..
Agree? Disagree?

Yes, "the heart of speed 1" is the one I like best. Probably because I´m very fond of b&w but also because I think the light is best here. It´s a little burned out in the others and that´s a known problem with this cameras. I had no 1Mp camera but I put my E20 on the shelf and used my C3040 (3Mp). No tripod, no special lighting - just daylight from windows. And it´s fantastic what this camera can do. |

I think "pylon" is a good one. Good composition - I looked more than once. And that means it must be interesting.

Heh, thank you. I got some funny looks taking that one, lying on my back under the pylon in the middle of downtown Austin, with the Saturday morning joggers running past

karmat: i like the concept a LOT but i feel the lighting was sort of flat. didnt add a lot of interest to either scene.
GeneralE: i like the monolith but i think the grain would have dragged down your score. Plus only a few would have gotten it :) .. the windmill was prolly the most accessable example of tech.
crabappl : your shot didnt do BAD, it was a little above avg. considering there were some truly STUNNING shots in the challenge, i'd say it did quite well : ) ..
carsten: i like your sub but im a sucker for closeups and i really like 2 and 3 also. ALSO - thanks for commenting on my shots :)
stephan: great night shot!
gordon: love the abstraction of the pylon. also like the sepia building but something strange with the vertical lines. they all slope from top left to bottom right..

I sat this one out, didn't have much time. I'm curious how any of these photos would have done. I didn't crop or adjust any.

Ahhh GeneralE, I get it now... doh... I like the idea!
Gordon, wow, pylon is really interesting and I think I would have scored it higher than the one you entered..
carsten I think I like microscope #3 the best
stephan I liked links... great job on keeping it so clean!
magnetic, I like the idea for camera placement on human flight... I would like to see more of the plane though.. :o)
terrygee, a couple of good ones there... calculate is cool... was the TAN cropped out on purpose? I would like to see all of it... and blancing act.. neat!.. are they one screw and a reflection or two screws?
also, here are my outtakes... comments anyone?

While I think your Femme-Tech has quite some humor and I don't understand how people didn't see the "technology" aspect, I think you should have submitted "Precursor". It's the better photo in my opinion."Basin" is also very good, it has a great lighting.

Thanks for the comments. Calculate is just a photo of a calculator that came out dark. When i fooled around with the colors I got that effect. No reason for the crop. The photos of the screws are actually one balancing on the other. Also have another version of balancing act .
