I am sorry, but the second one looks really fake. The colour on it is great and all, but the reflection would never look like that in reality.

You could put the relfection on a separate layer and adjust the opacity over the original water and erase portions of the edges to make it look like it actually belongs there.

Just a suggestion.

If you'd like I could take your image and show you how.

I hope you don't mind me having a go myself rll07..

Here's my effort

Still not great I know.. The problem is increasing the opacity of the reflection means the water becomes less textured, making it look more fake, so it's a fine line.

Please PM me and I'll remove the image on your request.

that "trick has it's place, but not in that photo. The pic was better off without the PS. The details in the waves and the stump or whatever is in the lake look much more natural.

Also, if you carefully observe natural reflections in nature, you will discover that very rarely you can see the entire top part reflected right from the top edge to the bottom edge. Many times (depending on a viewpoint) you will see the relfection starts actually 1/3 into the reflected surface. I hope this makes sense. I will try to find an example.

Here is my version. I will delete it from DPC after this thread is over. I hope the owner is not too upset at us for twidling with his photo.

I did it really fast so the colour correction is not at it's best.

rll07 at least in your "after" photo, you did good job with the colour correction.

This kind of "help" is present at Photocritique.net too and I like it. Anything I ever post, people should feel free to do their own version and put it up somewhere to show me. I think it helps me learn.

:)

As for the pictures - I like the trick, but I'm not even going to attempt it on this photo.

OK, I couldn't resist the practice...
Here is my effort.
I used a displacement map, as well as several layers with gradients and layer masks.
By the way, I believe this is Maroon Bells in Colorado (near Aspen).

This is a great exercise in showing how we have very different ideas of what reality looks like. My favorite version was from smellyfish1002 but each one is interesting.

I really like dan_pendleton's version. Nice ripples.
08/09/2003 07:35:17 PM · #20
Oh, timj351, I don't think it has to do much with reality. We can't fool mother nature.

well.. this is becoming a kind of photoshop skill context, isn't it?
Actually a skill (like the photoshop one) in order to be tested should consider also "the time to deliver".
I mean.. given enough time, everything becomes possible and pitzaman is once again right:
if it is too much time expensive then it may well not be worthwhile considering.
That's why I provide also the time I spent doing this: approx. 30 mins.
Also to have an alibi for whoever can see some of the many imperfections here and there. ;)

Here is my version of it:

A special "ciao" to my new friend timmi!

Time wise, mine took between 5 and 10 mins in between a game of Unreal Tournament 2003 :)
