Any ideas??? I am trying to create a halo effect around an object in a photo and can't seem to figure it out. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am learning to use Paint.net if that helps..
Thanks much

A super-heavy application of Unsharp Mask and possibly tone Curves or some blurring may work.

If you are talking about an entry for an Advanced challenge, you can do some dodging.

Here's an example from my collection:

I could tell you at least two ways to do it in Photoshop, but Paint.net is not something I'm familiar with.
If it includes a sharpening tool that allows you to adjust the "radius" and "amount" then try setting the radius to something large, and the amount to whatever works.

Do you have USM in Paint.net? You can create all sorts of funky halos with it.

Halos can be created by oversharpening.

or ....

merge two images - one sharp and with the greatest DOF possible with one that is blurred and has the least DOF possible

or ....

backlight your subject

or .....

If it is a halo effect of a single object, you could put it on its own layer, copy the layer and then blur the layer underneath.

Looked in Paint.net and didn't see any "USM". Would that be in an upgraded version??

Just try using any "Sharpen" filter or function -- if it has adjustments, set them to high numbers. If no settings, try applying it several times.

Work on a copy of your file.

No idea. I'm not familiar with Paint.net. Like GeneralE posted though, any sharpen might work. As cpanaioti posted though, the neat thing is to make halos before processing or other than sharpen halos :)

I also just read a tutorial by idnic about some photoshop layer masking to lighten or darken parts of a photo and in a different tutorial one of the people trying it accidentally had a halo effect by not getting close enough to the subject when he/she was trying to darken the bg. Hang on and I'll go find what I'm talking about and edit to post it here. Don't know if you can do this technique with paint.net though.

heres one...

and here's the main one I was speaking of. the other one is refered to in this one.

according to the screenshot on the getpaint website it does indeed have a sharpening tool.

Is this anything like what you want? Size of halo, of course, can be varied infinitely...

I'll write up the steps if anyone cares...

* A bit off topic but... *

Just curious if this would this be allowed for the advanced edit challenge? Because I'm confused of this rule: 'You may not ... obscure significant parts of your original capture'.

Thanks.

Creating the halo effect in a challenge entry would likely be construed as creating a new feature or element and result in a DQ.

Hi Bear...
The steps would be very much appreciated. I have tried in vain to learn how to do the layers and it stumps me. I'm using Paint.net.
Thank you for your help and advice.
