I wouldn't vote it lower if I could see the animal was placed there intentionally.

my guess is you would get crushed, I could be wrong, maybe a good camouflage shot would work. |

I don't even know a person named Waldo, let alone have a pet with that name. Guess I'll sit it out. :( |

The idea is hiding a person in a photo without any other people, right? I have an idea for this but want to make sure I have the idea of the challenge correct.

My bet is that some will not only have a pic with a hidden person, but (Scalvert perhaps) will have a complete Waldo costume, a perfect 1/32 scale city, with clouds made from dry ice, and waldo suspended by a crane craftily emerging from the clouds as just a waldo face, all perfectly legal in basic of course, and to top it off the post will state this was thrown togeather on the way to soccer practice in the garage at the last minute. It will score 7.342 and will set the standard for all waldo pictures in the future.
Just kidding of course, (just giving you a bit of a hard time Shannon :)

I would say you'd get nailed badly.
It's pretty clear: "Hide a person in your otherwise person-less photo."
Not a DQ, because you won't be DQd for not meeting the challenge.

That's not funny! That is exactly what he is planning. Now he has to go away and think again for this challenge! Hooray!! :)) |

On dpc if your picture is outstanding it will win. The technicality of an animal in the shot won't matter.

This shot was in a 2-second exposure and won 3rd place even though it was not 2 seconds.

Because no one could know how long it took. How do you know, actually? It's not listed. As compared to the winner, which shows as 1/2s.
In this challenge, in contrast, it's quite easy to see you didn't include a person in a challenge whose description clearly says to include a person.
Note that I'm not arguing whether it SHOULD be voted down, but I'm quite sure it would be.

Yes but if the 2 second shot won it was not fair to the others that tried to win by entering a 2 second shot. I stated that fact and got many PMs saying to lighten up.
IMO if it is fair to win a 2 second contest with a different exposure then you should be able to win with an animal as Waldo.

it's not so much a matter of whether or not it WAS a 2sec exposure - seeing as there was no DQ rule about it - but more that it LOOKED like a 2sec exposure. so in that respect it really wasn't unfair to anyone.
ask anyone if the camera lies, and they'll say 'yes'...

Look, this point has been debated repeatedly in the forums. For the record, soup, I don't always say the camera lies. Some people think it's a cheap entry, others think it's perfectly fine.
So let's stick to the original question, which was for THIS challenge, do we think an animal will be good enough? My answer is probably not for many people.

Go right ahead and call me a nazi, if you must, but you can rest assured that if I do vote, I will vote you down for anything other than a hidden " person in your otherwise person-less photo"
I truly don't understand this. When the "assignment" is as clear as this, just exactly WHY do people feel this need to rebel against it? Is it simply so they can defy an authority? Does it make them feel tough or super clever? I just don't get it.
If your job is to build furniture, do you insist on trying to get away with knitting sweaters, instead?
WHY not simply do your best to fulfill the "assignment" ??? |

Hey guys, what would happen if I hid the person too well?

Ok so the winner was 1/2 sec...the point is that I did not enter that challenge b/c I could not get a good 2 sec shot....
....I did not enter b/c I stuck with the spirit of the challenge. The winners broke the challenge topic and WON.
Since that 2-sec challenge, I vote on the merits of the picture. If the challenge is flower and the best pic in the challenge is a rat, I'll vote high for the rat.

Well about 2 years ago, I questioned something very similar after the Choices Challenge.
The challenge was "We all face many choices every day. Take a photo representing a choice that you must make."
I questioned how a butterfly shot met the challenge and made it to 13th place out of 227 entries. (it's a beautiful picture btw)
A butterfly making a choice of which flower pot to choose at Walmart is not a person, and when questioned about it, I was told the photographer had taken the butterfly's point of view and had become one with the butterfly.
I got crapped on for raising a stink and was told I needed to allow a bit more latitude in my way of thinking.
Many people consider their pets as having human characteristics, so anyone using a pet will fit the challenge by being waaaaay out of the box, and will get an appropriate score from the voters.
Just have fun and make pretty pictures.

You can have an animal in the image and it doesn't matter what his name is...no one will know. But if you can make it appear like there is in fact a hidden person in the image then you will most likly score better. Replacing the person for an animal will most likly get you bad scores, imho.
This challenge is particularly hard on both the voters and photographer, because what if you do hide the person too well and the voter can't find them. The voter may have to take a little more time looking at the image to see if the person is there or not. So are they going to vote high for hiding so well or are they going to vote you down thinking no one is really there? Tough challenge, good luck to all. |

I stand corrected! At least for that one.
I'm with Beetle, though. It's as clear as day, and I'll vote accordingly.
I won't vote low if I can't find the person, though. I regularly can't find hidden stuff in picture.

When a challenge is clear, and the word person is used, it's clear what the task is. If someone uses a dog or a butterfly or whatever in place of a person, and it's obvious, they will never get more than 4 from me, even if it's the best and most amazing picture ever to come on the site.
