We have a very constant flow of forum messages here related to equipment such as lenses and cameras. In our equipment database, it would be a great addition to the site if a "Post a Review" link was available where anyone could post a review of that specific piece of gear for others to read.

I'll second, third, and fourth that idea!!

And I will fifth it. Great idea.

It would also be very nice if we could add equipment to the database outside of cameras and lenses. Some good additions would be tripods, heads, filters, bags, etc.

What a bluudy brilliant idea!!

Please, please add that functionality, because as it is a lot of sensitive and important information is lost or is hard to find in the forums.
Will be easier if the owner of each equipment do the review and comments.

Surely something like this is real easy to do too?* Just add the comment feature to the equipment pages. Report post will take care of the occasional troll.

* ooh I sound just like my ex boss giving me a 3 week task and saying "It'll only take you 10 minutes won't it?"

I don't think it would be very difficult...

And how many times has this been suggested before?
Still a good idea and worthy of coming up again.

*It is good to search for existing suggestions before posting them*

I was going to suggest equipment reviews and implementing with the following features:

- Make the reviews in a fashion like many movie review (and other review) sites where people can mark it helpful and the most helpful reviews show up first.

- Put a link to any reviews a user has written, somehwere in their profile page. Maybe next to the hardware they wrote it on.

- Keep them separate from the normal forums and associated directly with the lens or camera being reviewed.

- Provide a template or ask for a consistent format that includes things like date of review, pros, cons, overall rating, etc.

This is one of those suggestion that has immense value to the community - like tutorials (and unlike the ill-fated "threads killed" stat).

Other than being helpful for existing members, such would attract oodles of new users looking for reviews.

Are you stating that as a good thing or a bad thing or just a neutral prediction?

Neutral :-) Knowing it has potential to be both good and bad.

I hear that. Maybe we should require the use of long, obscure, intellectually sophisticated words to weed out the riff raff. ;-)

I agree it certainly would be nice and I like the idea of adding extra photographic equipment as well!

Or make it available only to registered users and members. It would be a good way to get more peoples to register on the site and maybe become active.

Personally, the perpetuation of a constantly updatable and continuously refined database of photographically related......

aww hell - just DO it! (along with internal PM's)

under the lenses directory - under the number of users who own a specific lens there is a 'user rating' row. it's said ' coming soon' since the lenses archive was introduced...

I think it's a great idea. I'm always looking for opinions about equipment from owners.
